Tae clapped his feet together and giggled when the heel blinked. He had been talked out of walking with ski boots, but the blinking shoes were almost as good anyway. Usually he had to wear a uniform, but since this was a new kindergarten, he didn't have the right uniform yet and that meant he had gotten to dress himself. Especially the shoes delighted him.
He bounced a little in his seat, wondering how much longer they had to wait. "Are you excited, hyung?! You will make sooo many new friends! Everyone will think you are the coolest, cause you are."
"Nah, school sucks." He hated it. He was bad at everything and his teachers always yelled at him, he wasn't really looking forward to starting again. He watched Tae's shoes blink and smiled a little, knowing Tae would have a great day regardless. Little made Tae have a bad day. He was just glad he convinced him to get new shoes instead of ski shoes.
"School finishes at 3 and I'm not bothering with the cram school stuff so I'll be there to pick you up. You finish at 2.45 so wait inside the kindergarten for me." Jiho lectured to make sure that Tae understood everything. "Don't go anywhere I won't be able to find you. If we're late, abeoji won't be happy."
Jiho had been introduced to the class, made to say a few things about himself - which he awkwardly stuttered out because all eyes were on him, and then Namjoon led him along through his new homeroom. Namjoon stopped at Seokjin's desk and smiled down at Jin. He was one of his best students and very sociable, might help the kid ease up a little.
"Seokjin-ah, can you watch after Jiho for his first week? Just show him where the gym and music room are, where we have lunch." Jiho looked down at his shoes as Namjoon spoke. "Say hello to Jin, Jiho."
Jiho bowed politely to Jin and kept on studying his shoes. "Hello."
"Of course, Namjoon-seonsing." Jin smiled happily and pulled the chair next to him out so Jiho could sit down. He could sense that he was shy, it was kind of obvious. Jin was a nice kid though, so he immediately decided that he'd have to take good care of him. "It's nice to meet you! Sit down."
He made sure the desk was clear for Jiho, then turned to look at him. "I'll show you everything. Do you like gym? Or music?" He was curious, so maybe he could get to know him a little. "Namjoon-seonsing really likes to be in the music room."
"The new boy in my class, Jiho, is really talented. He can play piano so well! Yoongi-ssi was really impressed, I could tell." Jin figured that Jimin would be interested in any story as long as it involved the name 'Yoongi', so he might as well tell it. "He even asked him whether he wants to take part in competitions, because he played so well."
Jin was really impressed. "He's so interesting. I'm glad I have a new friend now."
"My new friend is better. He's smart too. And Yoongi likes him too!" Yoongi had never met him but Jimin liked to win sometimes. He felt like it'd impress Jin more than it'd annoy him. Sometimes he could be very wrong. He skipped along after Jin, dragging Chimmy along the pavement as he did, smiling up at Jin. "My friend is called TaeTae and he's the smartest boy. I think he was an astronaut once. And he plays sports."
He was none of those things but in his mind, he was. "Yoongi is so pretty. I wanna play piano too."
"And Jiminie has a whole room full of toys!" Tae hadn't been to the place yet, but the stories alone were marvellous. "He gets to play all day with them, it's so funny. He says if his hyung doesn't play with him, he just cries until he does."
Tae giggled, shaking his head and rubbing against Jiho's shoulder. "Hyung, he says that the piano teacher is a prince, so are you a prince now too? Cause you are playing piano and everyone thinks you are really, really, really cool because of it!"
He had always known that Jiho was cool, but it was great to have other people confirm it.
"They think I'm cool cause I hang with Jin, not cause I play piano." Gently, he pulled Tae into his lap and leaned back against the door of the guest room. Kangwoo was mad over something or other but Jiho wasn't having it today, he wasn't having Tae limping into school - not when they just got a good thing going on there. He'd run away with Tae and they were hiding but Tae was very chatty.
Kinda ruining their hiding but, well, he could never say no to the kid. "Hey, you know what? Soon I'll arrange a playdate for you and you can play with every toy Jimin has."
He wrapped his arms around Tae a little tighter. "Jin sounds like he has a lot to handle with Jimin."
Yoongi had noticed the bruises, of course he had, but he decided not to comment on it. Instead they had done a normal lesson and now he got up, stepping away from the piano to leave Jiho free reign of it. "Do you know what improvising means, Jiho?"
He looked at the boy curiously, trying to force his eyes to not linger on the bruises too much.
"Yeah, you just sort of make stuff up, right?" Jiho licked his lips as he practised the song that he had been playing for Yoongi. He had a lot of fun with this one cause it was challenging. He had to go up and down in tone so often and he had to move so fast during the middle. He messed up sometimes but he was getting way better at it. He looked up at Yoongi, curious and unsure what he meant.
"Why does improvising matter?" He thought music was about following the right notes, not making stuff up. "My last teacher said people who wing it in music are just stoners playing jazz."
Yoongi waited outside Namjoon's classroom, sipping on the coffee he had bought for himself and holding the one he had gotten for Namjoon. Namjoon liked his coffee sweet and with weird flavours, so he had provided. Even if these things could barely be called coffee anymore.
It was good coffee too, he had gone to the coffee shop across the street instead of getting what the teacher's lounge had. Apparently he had something to make up for, after all.
Jin nodded at him when he came back from the bathroom, then headed into the classroom, closing the door behind him and stopping by Namjoon's desk. "Yoongi-ssi is waiting for you outside."
"Oh... huh. Oh no. Oh God. What if this is about the random bran hunk? I don't think I can explain my way out of it. What do I do?!" He realised he was freaking out at a ten year old and soon stopped himself looking sheepishly at Jin. "Uh... never mind. Sorry. Go take your seat."
Hurriedly, he went to the door and slipped outside, eyeing up Yoongi and trying to gauge his mood. Curse his expressionless face.
"And then we looked at a video on Ten-hyung's phone! There was a kite, okay, and it flew reeeeeally high. So I thought it was from a movie, but then there was Ten-hyung and Hobi-hyung and it was their kite! And they said we would learn to build kites and then when the weather is right, we will go out and fly the kites aaaaall high!"
Tae bounced, jumping up with one arm outstretched to show how high it would be. "We can decide what colour we want our kite to be and then we can draw on it!"
It was so exciting, he had never done anything like it. "Hyung, hyung, did you know that kites can fly so high? Can you do it? I bet you can."
In his eyes, his hyung could do anything. "Did you do exciting things in school?"
"Yeah, kites are pretty cool." They were okay. Nothing he'd get excited over but TaeTae was a unique kind of kid. He had his own world, his own reasons to get excited and Jiho had come to expect it. He pulled his brother along so he kept pace and didn't run off without him. He didn't want to lose Tae. Not near things like roads.
Jiho knew how dumb kids could be. They had no awareness.
"I did math and then I had to analyse some boring text. It sucked. Pretty much." It was a long day and he hadn't had much fun. He would have rather looked at kites.
"His eomma was so nice. Wasn't she? That's a bit like what our eomma was like. Only she was quieter and attacked me with food less." Jin's parents were so nice. They fed them, they asked Jiho to play a little, they didn't pressure him or anything and before he left, Jin's eomma hugged him. He felt so warm inside. He hadn't had an eomma hug in so damn long.
He held onto Tae's hand with a smile, walking along the road and keeping Tae away from the curb. "And Jiminie had so many toys to play with. I bet you had so much fun."
Jimin sure did. He threw a tantrum when Tae had to go home.
"His eomma was really nice and soooo pretty." Definitely the prettiest woman in Korea, Tae agreed. "She hugged me!" It was so special, it made Tae imagine that being hugged by their eomma felt just as good. He skipped a little, bursting with happiness and excitement. It had been a great day and they could visit again! They had all said so.
"Jiminie has so many animals, I said hi to all of them. And dolls and cars and everything." He rubbed his face against Jiho's hand and placed a kiss on his knuckles. So much love to give. "We played everything. Did you play a lot too, with Jin?" He giggled. "Or did you kiiiiss?"
Most Saturdays, Yoongi got up relatively early so he could go to school and get some work done before heading up to visit his family. Today he hadn't yet decided whether he would do that, since he had left Namjoon behind in his bed and the thought of returning to his official bae for more cuddles was tempting, but he would cross that bridge when he got to it.
For now he opened the door, walked in and then almost had a heart attack when he saw two boys in the corner. His eyes were wide and for some reason he whispered.
"Jiho?" What was he doing here? "Is something wrong?"
"You--You said I could always come here if I had to. And I had to... I came. I'm sorry. I really needed to be here, I-- I didn't know what to do." Jiho explained, his eyes never leaving Tae. He woke up an hour ago after a painful night and Tae was breathing weird. He started wheezing this morning and now he was all shallow with his breathing. He kept checking, kept trying to wake him but he wasn't waking up.
"Tae's not waking up, hyung." He shook Tae gently again and leaned forward. "TaeTae, Yoongi-hyungnim is here. He can play piano for you if you open your eyes."
Why wasn't he opening his eyes? He sang the special morning song, he got him breakfast at the vending machine, he tried cuddling. His eyes wet with tears as he shook Tae again. "TaeTae, you gotta say hi to Yoongi-hyungnim, it's polite. Wake up!"
"What are you doing, Yoon-ah? Get them proper blankets!" Yoongi's mother scolded her son as she tucked a blanket over Jiho, who was now in a bed next to Tae's. The blanket was soft and had a cartoon tiger on it, as did the one she draped over Tae, but Yoongi still didn't see why he needed to be scolded over this.
"I don't travel with blankets!" Who did? That was weird. Yoongi had no idea how it had gone from him calling his mother to explain why he couldn't come by today to him holding Jungkook on his lap as his mother put out all sorts of things for the poor sick boys.
"I brought proper food. Hospital food is no good, they give you bad food so you don't stay long."
"...I don't think that's true, eomma."
"Because you know everything better, huh?" She rolled her eyes and ignored him, instead smiling at Jiho when she noticed that he was looking at her. "Are you awake, little angel? Do you want a snack?"
"You'll scare him! Jiho, that's my eomma. She came to... Bring you stuff." Apparently. Yoongi lowered his voice to talk to Jungkook. "She scares me."
Jiho stirred and looked up, not sure what was going on but it was nice. He liked eommas. He missed his own so much and right now, he just wanted to not be responsible for things. That meant having an eomma and a hyung. It was nice. He smiled a little at the eomma but he felt too weak to try moving.
Everything wasn't spinny and dizzy like it was before.
He remembered the check up and then little else afterwards. They talked about reporting his appa and he was sure he fainted. He looked at the blanket though, feeling the material with a small smile. It had tigers on it. He liked tigers.
"Eomma is scary." Jungkook whispered, giggling a little as he curled around his hyung. "Yoongi, I can give up my Dooly blankie for the sick boy. I'm a big boy now. I don't always need my blankie." But he would miss it. A lot. "Dooly is a good friend."
"This is pikachu, squirtle, eevee... snorlax." Okay, maybe he brought too many plushies cause there he was, setting them all onto Tae's bed with a small frown cause it seemed like way less when he was picking them out. He finally pulled Ryan from his bag and sat him in front of the pokemon. "And that's Ryan. He's the best. Erm. Yeah. I brought these for you."
"... You brought so many." Jiho mumbled, still trying to get his head around it, looking at Yoongi in confusion. Were they for Tae to have?
"You want one? All I brought you was homework." Namjoon watched Jiho's face fall before laughing a little. "Kidding, I'm not that mean."
He bowed his head a little bit, being polite. Even as he greeted the plushie. And then one after the other the other plushies, all with a very serious expression. Yoongi just shrugged his shoulders. Honestly, he didn't know what to make of that either, but Namjoon had been insistent.
In the meantime, he handed Jiho a music player with a set of headphones. The music player was in the colour Jiho had told him before was his favourite. "That's yours. I put some music on it already for now, but I'll show you how you can put your own on it when we're home."
"Your room is through here." Yoongi's place was thankfully relatively big, simply because he had gotten it through help from the school at a time when they had been very interested in him staying there, right around the time when he got his recording deal and they had started using that to further bolster prestige and he could essentially make demands so they could keep him.
Right now it came in really handy, because it meant there actually was an extra room for the boys, one that had by now been outfitted with dressers, desks, beds and chairs. The plushies and posters were mostly courtesy of Namjoon, but hey. Tae certainly appreciated them, immediately walking in and looking around in awe.
This was so much better than his old room, colourful and with toys! He looked at Jiho and held a hand out to him so he could snuggle close, not sure what to say. It was so cool.
"Your clothes are already in the dresser. We got some boxes from your old place and my eomma insisted in unpacking." Yoongi shrugged. "We really need to get you more fun clothes, huh? And cool stuff."
"... Are my clothes not cool?" Well. Jiho was preppy. Though he didn't want Yoongi to think he wasn't look so he nodded, looking at Yoongi with concern. "I want cool clothes." He didn't want to be a dork. He guessed he was the only kid who wore a button up shirt outside of class but he liked buttons.
He walked further into the room and then look around, holding Tae close to him. He crouched down, smiling at Tae. "What do you think? Do you like it?"
"I put up Pokemon posters and I got plushies, we can put up more posters and get new toys. We sort of got whatever sheets looked the most fun so, uh. I dunno if they're good or not." Namjoon got Tae jungle themed and Jiho had more older boy sheets with headphones and cool skater slogans on it.
Though part of him did wonder what Jiho liked. He only ever talked about what Tae liked. Maybe he could ask Jin.
"Bye! Bye, Jiho-hyung! Learn a lot!" Tae waved to Jiho until he couldn't see him any more, then he closed the door and immediately pouted. He wanted to go! He was at a disadvantage. He knew why he wasn't allowed to go and he was still hurting a lot, but he missed his friends!
He walked over to the couch and sat down on it, looking saddened as he leaned back and sighed. How much longer until Jiho came back!?
Namjoon had booked the day off from work because Yoongi had to work today and someone had to stay with TaeTae. Luckily Ten had agreed to sub for him last minute... although he was very concerned what was going to happen today but tomorrow he'd be back and Yoongi could take over Tae-watching duty.
He sat down by Tae and looked at the small boy, stroking his hair back. "What's a matter, TaeTae? Do you miss Jiho?"
Because Tae was going to kindergarten again today, Jungkook had decided that today was the day he finally faced kindergarten because he wanted to go with Tae. Tae was so cool! He wanted to play with him and use glitter pens. He hadn't ever wanted to before, he was an anxious boy and other children set him on edge. It wasn't that he was shy, he just couldn't when there was a lot of noise and people.
Which is why he skipped along to school with Tae, Dooly and Yoongi, all excited and smiles until he saw the classroom. Tae was soon stole by Jimin cuddling him and screaming loudly.
In panic, Jungkook tried to get up Yoongi's leg, whine-crying the whole time. "Lemme up! I wanna go up! I wanna go hommmmme."
Yoongi ruffled Jungkook's hair, but didn't let him up just yet. Instead he knelt down next to him and wrapped an arm around him to hold him close, watching Tae and Jimin, eyes narrowing a little.
"Eh. Jiminie. Be careful with TaeTae."
He said it calmly and Tae turned to look at Yoongi and Jungkook, then he nodded at Jiminie and indicated his sides. "It hurts a bit, cause my ribs were all broke."
He knew he had to be careful, but cuddling was important! Tae took Jimin's hand and pulled him along. "Come, you have to meet Jungkook. Jungkookie! This is Jiminie, I told you about him."

He was just going to go ahead and call it home.

Kangwoo's taste was very preppy.

He walked over to the couch and sat down on it, looking saddened as he leaned back and sighed. How much longer until Jiho came back!?

He sat down by Tae and looked at the small boy, stroking his hair back. "What's a matter, TaeTae? Do you miss Jiho?"

"Eh.
