"I got one, Joon!" Jackson yelled to his partner as he held the kid by one arm, almost lifting him off the ground without even meaning to. So light! They had been told it was two punk kids, but he somehow hadn't expected kids quite that young. How young was this kid, nine? Younger? Clearly from the streets too, going by the state of his hair and clothes.
And a scrappy little guy, valiantly struggling in his grip and calling out to his partner in crime. "Run!"
Yoongi threw the meds to Hobi, who caught them and took off running toward the other end of the alley, ready to run all the way. He was sure Yoongi could get out of this, but Jimin needed the meds now.
Namjoon grabbed the other boy before he could teach the end of the alley way, wrapping his arms around the kid and trying to keep him still. It took a lot of effort but he pried the drugs from the boy's hand and tossed them onto the floor. He'd get them later. For now, he had to try and calm them down. When they heard it was for a bust, he figured an actual bust with teenagers. These were kids. Kids stealing--
Huh. Children's painkillers? Weird. He ignored the boy fighting against him, dragging him over to where Jackson was struggling.
"Damn, do you remember being this feisty? God." He got the boys arms behind his back as gently as he could, restraining him. Shit, his arms were so thin. These boys looked so fragile. They didn't smell great, they were dirty and thin, their clothes were not the best. It was a sad state to be in. "We're officers of the law. It's a criminal offence to lash out at a police officer. Do you understand me, son?"
"Hey, Joonie." Jin came from the nurse's lounge with two cups of coffee that he handed to the two cops in their chairs, nodding at Jackson. "Hey."
Jackson blinked, rubbing his eyes as he forced himself to sit up properly and take the cup. Mhmm, coffee. He looked at Jin and frowned, shaking his head. "How long's your shift been?"
"Twenty hours now." Jin was confused by the question and Jackson just gestured at him, looking perfect.
"Is that one of the aliens you know, Namjoon?" Just asking. "How does he look like this after twenty hours? His hair is perfect."
Jin smiled graciously, then turned a little more seriously as he looked at Namjoon. "We need the boy's fever to break. If it does, he can make it." So far, it wasn't looking good. "The others are... Well, there's signs of neglect of course. They're basically in starvation mode. The older ones have a lot of bruises. Tae has older injuries... But they seem fine. They are asleep now, apart from the one they call Suga, he's refusing to leave the door by the sick boy's room."
"Oh, he's always perfect." He smiled and looked back at Jin, worrying for his boyfriend but knowing that twenty hours was unfortunately pretty normal for a doctor, especially one in training. This, though, was not supposed to be a night where he pulled a double shift. He probably wasn't prepared for it.
Namjoon would get him lunch soon. Taking his coffee, he sipped it and listened to Jin talk, nodding along.
"I hope it breaks. I've never seen a kid in a state like that before. He felt so hot. I've seen some bad stuff in my time, you know? But -- shit, that place was revolting and they lived there." It wasn't sure that that the youngest boy had been that sick but the boys had been living among that for God knows how long. "We're still researching them, trying to find names and maybe guardians... though that one seems unlikely."
Still, they had to check. He looked up at Jin and smiled sadly. "He said he wouldn't leave Jiminie."
Min Teddy was sick too, he had been sick since Jimin was sick. They always felt everything together. He was also in the hospital cause he was sick! Did he get better too? He looked better. Jimin was holding Min Teddy with a small frown while Yoongi napped in the chair, afraid to wake his hyung. He was still sick, still a bit out of sorts so when Jin came in, he got a little confused. He was so handsome, so big and strong, he had a nice smile and must have been the doctor who fixed his bear.
And fixed him too. Made him less sweaty and sick. He was what an appa should be, not like his last appa. He'd been so mean, he wanted a proper appa.
Holding his arms out, he looked up at Jin. "Appa. You fixed Min Teddy."
"I'm not your appa, I'm your doctor." However, Jin still bent down so he could pull Jimin into a hug, holding him, remembering that Suga had told him that Jimin liked hugs and cuddles. He was so tiny. So fragile. Jin was so relieved that he had pulled through, but he would need a lot more care and the thought alone that he didn't have loving parents who'd take care of him was breaking his heart a little. "Is Min Teddy feeling better now, Jiminie?"
Jin smiled and gently stroked Jimin's hair. "And how are you feeling?"
"Hey, you kids doing well? How you doing there, Jiminie? Feeling better?"
Jimin nodded eager, he was cuddling Jungkook in his lap and they were reading. Though Jimin was not great at reading so mostly he was commenting on the pictures and ignoring how sleepy he felt. He was sick but he wanted to play with his brothers. "I'm good. Hobi got me a soda!"
From the vending machine and everything, still cold. It tasted the best.
"What a good hyung." Namjoon smiled as he came in properly, shutting the door behind him and grabbing a chair. "So, we all need to have a little talk about where you're going to be staying going forward. Given you can't go back on the streets. It's bad."
"I don't know. It's pretty good." Hobi was an optimist, he would argue their case. "There's a lot of space. Fresh air. Really nice, that."
"And if you stick to staying under bridges, you got a roof too." What a life hack. Yoongi gave a thumbs up and Tae giggled, approving of his hyungs being silly. He always did.
He nodded in agreement too. "There's a lot of space to dance! I can dance, Namjoon-hyung, look!" The dance he showed off was a little bit bizarre, but hey. He had a lot of energy.
"Joonie, can you set the table?" Jin was focused on the various pots he had on the stove. A lot of children meant they needed a lot of food, especially since all of them had a lot of catching up to do where eating was concerned. So even for breakfast, it was rice and various side dishes. Today he was working on tofu stew, rice porridge with eggs and cauliflower cooked with fermented soy beans, so it was already smelling nice, but it also needed his attention and he still had to fry up the eggs.
"I swear, at least one of them was up late again. I saw light and then they switched it off."
"That was Suga and Hobi, they're not subtle. I heard them talking at one am, hushing each other and loudly telling each other they'll wake us up." Clearly they needed another rule talk. They signed the contract and it was a 10am bed time, not whenever the hell they felt like it. They'd disturb the other kids. "They're always sleeping in, when school starts then it's a real problem."
Setting the table, he helped carry everything around and set out the plates and bowls. Special plastic ones for Jungkook. "The youngest boy won't get ready until the oldest dresses him and the oldest is always sleeping in." So Jungkook didn't get up on time and that made him distressed... it was a mess.
Namjoon had bought a lot today. So much that Yoongi had to sit in the front with him cause the backseat had all kinds of crap on it. Books, toys, kids bedding and teddy bears. He pushed the boat out, like he promised he would, and the boys had been so helpful telling him what they did and didn't like.
Now it was their turn to get stuff. "Okay, I got a spending limit of one hundred and fifty each for both of you. I'm trying to hold it back but -- uh, I'm real bad at that."
As they learned when Namjoon spend a good ten minutes trying to put some stuff back so he didn't go over his limit... and then ended up with more. He found a load of alien toys! He had to get them. "We're pulling up to the shopping mall so we'll get clothes and shoes, anything left over we can just get fun stuff, yeah? Whatever you want."
Yoongi exchanged a look with Hobi, honestly not sure what to make of all this. This was an insane amount of stuff, neither of them had expected anything even close to this. Why was Namjoon investing this much money? How much money did Namjoon have? One hundred and fifty on each of them? Yeah, officially insane.
"Thank you, hyung." Yoongi wasn't sure what else to say.
"Yes, thank you!" Hobi decided that this was ultimately pretty cool. "Hyung, can we go into the music store? They have one on the second floor."
"Stop looking for your bae and focus up." Yoongi was looking through his notes and Hobi's pacing was really not helping his concentration. He felt good about tonight. He had new material - good material - he had been writing and practising a lot, given he actually had a keyboard. Jimin might have a hatred toward the keyboard by now, but Jungkook loved listening to him, content to sit with him for hours sometimes.
Hobi apparently couldn't even stand still for a minute. Yoongi rolled his eyes. "He'll find us after we've been on stage!"
"What if I want him to find us now, huh? I miss him!"
He was alive. Hobi was alive. Ten was the smallest boy in here by miles, he had to stand on the bar stool to even see the stage but as he scanned it during set up, he noticed someone near the stage he hadn't seen for a week. The warehouse had been raided, cops had been there and all that was left was a gross mess. He was sure they'd all died or been arrested.
Ten slid through the crowd and watched hesitantly, unsure why Hobi had left for so long. He needed him and he left!
"Hobi?" Ten slipped from the crowd but kept distance, looking at the older boy.
"Hello. You must be Ten." Jin smiled at the boy who didn't know who was seated at his kitchen table, stretching a little. It had been a long shift, but that wasn't anything new. He mostly didn't mind, but he really wanted some comfort now. "I'm Jin-hyung. Do you like hot chocolate?"
That said he already headed for the fridge, hoping that there would be enough milk left.
"No, I, uh, I don't speak Korean. Only Thai. No speak." Ten got up swiftly and shook his head, knowing that he shouldn't have stuck around this long. He eyed up where Hobi had gone off to sleep and glared at the door. Dumbass. How did he need to sleep this much? They used to barely sleep.
Hot chocolate did sound good though. He eyed him up, cautiously considering him. Oh shit, he was so handsome. What a beautiful man.
Yoongi looked up when Namjoon came into the office, lifting a hand and waving. He was waiting quietly, a black eye slowly developing and his uniform dirty and torn quite a bit. He didn't exactly like getting into fights, but sometimes it was inevitable. At least that was what he felt. Still, he hadn't meant for Namjoon to have to come here.
All the kids at this school sucked. They told on people, they lied, they could dish out but not take.
"Sorry I'm late, I was on duty and someone had to cover for me." Namjoon took a seat, unsure what to do or how to cope with this. He'd never done one of these kind of things. He smiled politely, bowed and then leaned forward to shake hands. "I'm really sorry about all of this, I-- Yoongi, what did you do?"
God, he looked a mess. Why was he brawling at school?
"I need to talk to Kim Namjoon!" Yoongi didn't want to go to the police station, but he wasn't sure what else to do. He looked like some kid that had just walked in off the street, with obvious signs of a fight on his clothes and his face and just generally not really like someone in the position to demand specific officers. "Please! He's my hyung."
Luckily for him, Jackson was eating a yoghurt and looking his way idly, reaching out to tap Namjoon on the shoulder. "Isn't that one of yours?"
"What?" Namjoon looked up from his laptop and frowned, getting to his feet. "Yoongi?" What on Earth was he doing here? He slipped passed his partner and across the room, stopping in front of Yoongi and looking him over. "Christ, kid, you been brawling? What the hell happened? Are you okay?"
He was already looking him over for signs of injury.
"Hyung!" Tae tugged on Namjoon's pants leg insistently, looking as sad as he possibly could while he waited for him to pay attention. "You have to help!"
He had problems too, not just the big ones. "My boy! He dug." Wait. "Boyfriend. I have a boyfriend and he dug too! Like Ten did! Dug so deep."
It was quite tragic. "What do I do? Do you have to hold me?"
"... He dug?" What? Oh God, it was his day off. He finally got Yoongi and Hobi to calm down a little, Ten was recovering and now Tae felt like they needed more issues. He continued to pour coffee into his mug, looking confused at Tae.
"What did he dig?"
Okay, it was funny to tease. He turned around, sipped his coffee and tried not to smile. "Who's your boyfriend?"
This morning wasn't like most mornings when he was awkward or picky with his clothes or being just plain sleepy. This morning, Jungkook decided that Yoongi was the moon and stars, all he wanted and he was especially clingy. For the first time, Yoongi was lying in and that meant he wasn't busy.
From the moment Yoongi had woken up, Jungkook had just been quiet, content and clinging to Yoongi like a needy koala.
Well, it was easier to deal with than a no day, Yoongi would say that much. He let Jungkook hold him and hugged him close in turn, especially whenever he heard Jungkook make those very quiet, needy sounds. He kept his own voice low, running his fingers through Jungkook's hair. "Did you have a bad dream?" Maybe that had triggered the mood, it was hard to tell.
