"You like the noodles?" Yoongi hadn't really eaten his much yet. He didn't feel like food. He felt like collapsing to the ground and dying, honestly, but instead here he was, sitting upright at the table, watching Jungkook eat with Dooly on his lap.
Today had been so very weird. "Does Dooly like them?"
"He does, yeah. He can't eated them properly cause his tummy is hurt." Dooly, his garbage soft toy plucked from the dumpster Yoongi had passed out by was ripped in many places and the stomach was basically a hole with stuffing oozing out. Jungkook poked it all back in as much as he could, manhandling the filthy toy in between bites of food.
The lady who ran the place was looking at them oddly but Jungkook was such a sweet boy, she didn't say anything. He was very polite. He smiled at her, asked her about the food and told her she was very pretty.
Jungkook thought it was important to be nice. Especially since Yoongi wasn't. He looked sick. "Are you sick, hyung?"
"Yes. I drank too much yesterday. My tummy is hurt too." To say the least. Yoongi could definitely relate to the broken toy. Very poetic. He smirked, running a hand through his hair and resting his head almost on the table, only just holding it upright with his hand. He didn't want them getting thrown out before the boy had finished eating.
"We need to figure out where you're going to sleep, Jungkook. You and Dooly." Damn. His head hurt too much to think about this.
"By the Chinese food place!" Jungkook informed him proudly, smiling at him because he had a plan all worked out. "It's warm and it's dry so I slept there yesterday. It was scary and lonely but now I'll have Dooly so it's okay." He looked down at Dooly and petted his head, making the toy near deflate from the weight of his little hand. "It smells nice and the vent on the wall is warm so it's like being inside."
That was his plan. He didn't want to go home cause eomma wasn't waking up and appa might come back - he always yelled. He would just hide until he was big enough.
"I have my winter coat on. Eomma says I have to wear it or I'll get a cold. My shoes are fluffy inside too." He tried to pry his foot up onto the table to show Yoongi his winter boots.
"Don't put your foot up on the table. That's not polite." Damn.
Yoongi had already figured out that Jungkook's mother must have died. Why hadn't anyone taken the boy in yet, weren't there services for that? He rubbed his eyes and smiled a little bit. "It's good you're dressed right for the cold."
He really needed a plan. He wouldn't even have money to buy any booze after this, so his own wise plan was already out the window anyway. Might as well focus on the kid first. "Listen, we'll go sleep there together, yeah? Then it won't be scary for you at all."
He hoped. "And tomorrow we can go to the rec centre. There's other kids there."
"You work here?" Yoongi approached Namjoon when he saw him walk to the rec centre entrance with a key in his hands, bowing a little. He knew he looked like shit, so it wasn't as if he was going to make a good first impression, but the hell with that. They had been waiting here for about half an hour. He wanted this over with so he could get drunk somewhere, somehow.
"I found this boy, he's on the streets. His mother's gone. He needs someone looking after him."
"Uh-- man, you want the police... I think." What? This was a lot at once. He was just opening up, he had a play group and suddenly this homeless dude was coming over to him with some half asleep boy in his arms. Urgh, it was way too early. He sipped his coffee and looked at the guy, vaguely recognising him but not sure how to place him. He turned his head and sighed. "Just come in for a sec, we'll sort this out."
He unlocked the rec center door and opened it up, holding it for the two and shutting it behind him. He rushed ahead to enter his input code and turn on the power and lights. He jacked up the heat a little cause these two looked cold.
"You found a child and he's definitely not yours, huh?"
"I am. Hyung." Jungkook whined sleepily as he clung to the other. "Hyung, tell him."
"I'm gay." Yoongi hoped that would clear that up in a way that wouldn't tip Jungkook off about what he was saying. It also maybe made it sound as if he was homeless because he was gay, which was actually not the case, but whatever. His life story didn't matter here, this was about Jungkook. He hugged him close, shaking his head. "We ran into each other the other day. I bought him some noodles and made sure he'd sleep safe, that's all. I'm not going to the cops, I don't want to end up in some holding cell over this."
Besides, he was hoping that Jungkook would go to a better place when there were people who cared involved. Rec centre people were supposed to care, right? At least about cute kids like this one. "He needs someone."
"He's my hyung. We need a bed together, mister hyungnim." Jungkook requested as he clung onto Yoongi, not wanting to be let go. He had gotten attached already and he wasn't willing to give up without a fight. "Hyung is sick."
"Uh-huh." Hyung looked wrecked, not sick. Was he on a bender for months or something? His eyes were blood shot, he was thin and zombied. He probably shouldn't have a kid, that was true. "It's not really my job but you can leave him here and I'll call the cops for you, say he was just missing. I'm sure you have some kind of family."
"I do. Hyung." Jungkook pouted. "I don't want the cops."
"Maybe you want some cookies. I have snacks." Namjoon tried, smiling softly at the boy and coming in close. "I'm Kim Namjoon. You can call me Joonie-hyung, yeah? We could have banana milk and cookies while we wait. Maybe they'll even play the siren when they come. That's so cool, right?"
Yoongi tried not to feel embarrassed over the way this guy looked at him. He knew he was trash, it was easier to deal with when he wasn't faced with a guy roughly his age looking at him like that. His chest felt tight and he wanted to be anywhere but here.
"The cops are going to be really nice, Jungkookie. And they have cool uniforms, right? It's going to be fun to meet them." Yoongi leaned down to try and set Jungkook down, gently attempting to pry to boy off of him. "Hyung has to leave, Jungkook."
His kind were definitely not welcome here, he knew that.
"There we go." Yoongi finished taping the picture to the wardrobe, making sure it was easily visible from the bed.
The room wasn't so bad, all in all. There was a water boiler, which he was grateful for, it was all pretty clean, if small, and the bathroom looked nice enough too.
Since he had been given enough of an advance - Yoongi was sure it had to do with how a sleeping Jungkook had been in his arms at the time of talking to the manager - he had paid for a whole week at once. It was pretty great to not have to worry about having somewhere to stay in the immediate future and in here it was warm and dry.
"Now, are you ready for the surprise?"
Jungkook had been asleep still just before they had been able to check in, so Yoongi had taken the opportunity to go to the convenience store and pick up a few things, wanting to be a good appa. Nothing expensive, of course, he still had some money left. One never knew what might happen.
"It's my picture! Is it pretty, hyung? I think it's pretty. I drew you and me and our eommas." It was hard to make out the people exactly but he had put a lot of colour into it and he'd been so proud of it. He wanted a family picture cause families had those and that's what they were now. He bounced on the bed and hugged Dooly close, full of energy now he'd napped.
He'd had a big day and fallen asleep before they even left the rec center. It was hard to stay away when meeting so many new friends and having so much to do.
Looking eagerly at his hyung, he smiled and tilted his head to the side, waiting patiently. "You got me a surprise, appa? What kind of surprise?"
"You'll see. First I got breakfast..." That wasn't all that exciting, so he just put the bread and jam he'd gotten next to the kettle, then looked into the bag he had again. "And I got a few snacks. Maybe we can watch some TV and snack a little." He put the snacks out. There had been a good deal, so he had a small variety of sweet and savoury, he still had to find out what Jungkook liked.
"And last of all, the surprise." Yoongi reached into the bag and retrieved the last two item, a blank notebook with a bunny on the front and a little box filled with a variety of colour pencils. "Now you can draw even more pictures!"
Jungkook's eyes lit up and he lurched forward, taking the special notebook and hugging it to his chest, clearly very pleased with his surprise. He pulled the notebook back and giggled a little, there was a silly bunny on the front and he was bouncing. "It's a bunny. I like bunnies. They don't make a sound but they hop and wiggle their noses."
He scrunched up his nose and tried his best to wiggle it like a bunny, smiling as he held the notebook over his head, excited and adoring his brand new appa so much.
"Thank you very much, appa. You're the best!" Easily. He set the book on the bed and reached out to hug Yoongi. "When we watch TV, can we cuddle?"
"Yeah. We have to, that's the rule." Yoongi climbed onto the bed, pulling Jungkook onto his lap right away as he found a comfortable position for them both. "I asked really nicely downstairs and they gave us free toothbrushes and toothpaste, so we can be really good later and brush our teeth properly."
He said it to Jungkook mostly to include him in it all. They had to build a life, so they had to figure out how to do it together. "We have to put a few things on our list. First we need to get you more clothes. Then some for me too. And we should get a few books, so I can read to you, yeah?"
That sounded good and he was hoping it was all stuff he could get for cheap at a second-hand store or market somewhere. "And then we have to work on getting enough money that we can rent a place. So we'll have our own kitchen."
"Hello, mister hyungnimssi." He didn't know which honorific to use for the nicely dressed man who walked in so he just used them all, bowing very politely and then looking up at him. He was holding a mop and trying his very best to help hyung clean the floors when he got distracted by Seokjin arriving with the coolest car he'd ever seen. "You have a nice car. What type of car is it?"
Namjoon had to laugh from where he was sitting, happily on break from organising morning events and letting Hobi have free reign of the space now. "Jungkook-ah, this is Seokjin. Jin, this is little Jungkookie. He's our janitor's boy."
He turned his head, trying to find where Yoongi was. He was such a hard worker, he was always moving so quickly.
"Is that why it's so clean suddenly? I thought you just finally decided to actually do your job." Jin was teasing Namjoon, obviously, looking around briefly for the janitor, but seeing him nowhere.
He didn't know that Yoongi had recognised him - the face was hard to forget - and decided to clean everywhere but here. He didn't need to meet an old classmate so close to the lowest point in his life.
So instead, Jin focused his attention on Jungkook, while Siwoo in his arms chewed on his button again. What else was new? "It's a Hyundai Palisade. Nice car, right? The commercials convinced me."
"It's very cool, i bet it's real fast. Is that your baby, Seokjin-hyungnim? He is very, very little." Jungkook told him as he looked up at the small baby in Jin's arms, curious to see him. Siwo was more interested in chewing on various parts of his appas coat and babbling baby nonsense as he did so.
"Tae is going to be thrilled to see Siwoo here today, he keeps asking when his little dongsaeng is coming." Namjoon knew that Tae loved being an older brother but right now, he was eager to help Hobi set up all of his stuff for his lesson. Such a good boy.
Namjoon smiled as he watched the small boy study the baby, amused by him calling the baby little. They were both pretty little. "Hey, Mr Worldwide Handsome, you want me to clean on top of everything else? Pay me better."
It was a tease, he got paid pretty well overall, even if he did work a lot of overtime these days. Namjoon got up and walked over. "Do you need me to watch the kid for a few?"
"Yes, if you can, please? I got a callback that I wasn't expecting and I need to hurry up and make it to the audition. I would have called Jiho, but he's in the studio all day today, there's no signal there."
He could reach him in a real emergency, but this was why they donated so much to this place. Well, this and the fact that they did love Namjoon and cared about the community, but still. "Besides, Siwoo really wants to see his TaeTae-hyung again. And he'll be so happy to meet his new hyung, won't you, Siwoo?"
Jin crouched down so Siwoo was on Jungkook's level, smiling at him. "He's still very small, he's just over a year old now. You are such a big boy compared to him."
"Hello, Siwoo. You're just a little baby so I'll be really nice and help you today." Jungkook informed Siwoo, who put his hand in his mouth and dribbled happily all down his chin, gurgling excitedly as he smiled at Kookie. He'd said his first words recently and it was all a steady road of progress from there. His first word was appa, then dada and now he knew a few words like baba, moo and Joon. And even Ta. Which was him trying to say Tae.
"Ta. Ta. Ta." Siwoo chanted as he flailed his arm excitedly, fling spit all up Jin's jacket. To save him from being attacked any further, Namjoon crouched down and gently took Siwoo off him.
"I don't mind, hyung. You know I'll always do it if I can." He smiled at his hyung and bounced Siwoo gently up and down. "We're gonna play with TaeTae and Kookie today. So much fun!"
Jungkook giggled and reached out to touch Siwoo's cheek. So soft. "He's tiny."
"We need milk." Jungkook held the milk carton with both hands and toddled over to Yoongi, avoiding the sea of people's legs so he could place the milk into the basket. They didn't have much fridge space so they could only get the essential foods that fit in there. And he needed it for cereal. Cereal and milk was his favourite.
He picked Dooly up from where he'd left him by Yoongi's foot and hugged him tight as he watched Yoongi look over food. Was it food? It was -- no, it was bottles. Huh. They were colourful and pretty.
"What? Oh. No, no. Not these. Maybe if we see a fun juice bottle." Damn, he would have liked to get some soju, but he had to think of Jungkook. Looking down at him, he smiled a little, ruffling his hair. Not only did he not have the money to waste on booze, he also didn't want to be drunk around Jungkook. He had to be better than that, for his sake. Yoongi took the bottle from Jungkook and put it into their shopping cart next to the cereal.
By now they had two bowls and some spoons, chopsticks too. All they needed for their breakfast, most other meals they tended to have at the centre. Although sometimes they also had snacks. "What else do we need to buy, huh, Kookie?"
Clothes had been the first priority. Mostly clothes for Jungkook, Yoongi was still working with a very minimal wardrobe. But whatever, he had an overall for work anyway, so what did it matter? With most essentials out of the way, Yoongi was hoping to be able to start saving up so they could afford rent for a place eventually.
"You said we needed stuff to wash with and snacks." He didn't remember what they had discussed perfectly but he knew they were out of shower gel cause they used the last of it today. Yoongi had to help him shower cause he couldn't use it all by himself but that kind of made bathtime fun! Jungkook liked doing everything with appa. He held Dooly in one hand and reached out to hold Yoongi's other hand.
"We could not shower ever again but then we'd be smelly." And that was very much on his humour level so he giggled at the idea, grinning up at his new appa. "You need to smell good, appa! Then everyone will like you. People didn't like you before when you were all smelly and dirty. Namjoon-hyung says that no one likes to play with a smelly kid!"
Or he'd been telling Tae that to try and convince him to take a bath anyway. In his head, it made sense. When he met Yoongi, no one likes him - now he showered and everyone did!
"That's true. You've gotta be clean and smell nice, then people like you. And it feels better, doesn't it?" Yoongi smiled a little, wondering how Jungkook would feel about him and the state he had been in when they first met once he thought back on it when he was older. It did not feel good. All the more motivation to keep from it. He steered their cart toward the bathroom products, holding on to Jungkook's hand.
"Imagine if you were all smelly, you'd get thrown into the dumpster!" Yes, he knew how to entertain tiny children.
Jungkook giggled at the idea and pulled a gross face at him, ever amused by his silly appa. "We met at a dumpster, didn't we? It smelled." Jungkook nodded wisely. "All of us did. Me, you and Dooly. He had a bad tummy and you were all fally-downy." It was hard to believe it had been a few weeks since then. Yoongi was very different from when he first met him but he knew that Yoongi was special, even then.
Yoongi was his appa. His hero! The best in the world. "What do you wanna smell like this time, appa?" He looked at the options and then picked up one that was blue. He didn't know what it said, he just liked blue. "This one is pretty."

Today had been so very weird. "Does Dooly like them?"
Whatever. Might as well play along.
