"By the Chinese food place!" Jungkook informed him proudly, smiling at him because he had a plan all worked out. "It's warm and it's dry so I slept there yesterday. It was scary and lonely but now I'll have Dooly so it's okay." He looked down at Dooly and petted his head, making the toy near deflate from the weight of his little hand. "It smells nice and the vent on the wall is warm so it's like being inside."
That was his plan. He didn't want to go home cause eomma wasn't waking up and appa might come back - he always yelled. He would just hide until he was big enough.
"I have my winter coat on. Eomma says I have to wear it or I'll get a cold. My shoes are fluffy inside too." He tried to pry his foot up onto the table to show Yoongi his winter boots.
"Don't put your foot up on the table. That's not polite." Damn.
Yoongi had already figured out that Jungkook's mother must have died. Why hadn't anyone taken the boy in yet, weren't there services for that? He rubbed his eyes and smiled a little bit. "It's good you're dressed right for the cold."
He really needed a plan. He wouldn't even have money to buy any booze after this, so his own wise plan was already out the window anyway. Might as well focus on the kid first. "Listen, we'll go sleep there together, yeah? Then it won't be scary for you at all."
He hoped. "And tomorrow we can go to the rec centre. There's other kids there."
Jungkook ate more noodles, concentrating hard as he spooned them into his mouth. He was still young, he wasn't doing so well with the eating part but he was trying his best. Even if the sauce from the noodles went all over his face. "What's a rec center, hyung? Is it like a playground?"
He ate another big bite and then leaned over, sipping his water through a straw and gulping happily. It was nice to have food and water.
"I like that we can sleep together, hyung." Jungkook smiled at him, innocent and chipper. "We can protect each other."
"Yeah. I won't have to worry about anything when you're here." Yoongi said it drily, given how many more worries he suddenly had, but it was good to see Jungkook enjoying the food so much. He made sure to put some of his own portion with him, thinking it a lot more important that the little one ate enough.
"Rec centre is short for recreational centre. They have all sorts of things there, like games and toys. And the people who work there will know how to help you and Dooly."
"Do they know how to help you, hyung? You look sick and you drank too much yesterday. Eomma did that sometimes, it's not good for you." Jungkook explained ever so wisely to Yoongi. He didn't seem to think he needed help though so he assumed that Yoongi didn't know how dangerous it was. "My eomma always said I should never, ever drink cause it's ick. I smelled one of the bottles once..."
He stuck out his tongue and made gross noises before he started to eat more noodles, humming happily and bouncing in his seat a little.
To be fair, he did. He just thought he'd die faster. Maybe he'd have to take a shortcut soon. He was too aware of the lighter in his pocket, but right now he had other things to focus on.
Yoongi looked at Jungkook with a slight smile. He was a cute kid, it was a shame all of this had happened to him. Luckily he didn't seem too badly off yet, so if he could just get him help tomorrow, he'd be fine. Or as fine as he could be, anyway. "Hyung can operate on Dooly later. I have a sewing kit."
Might as well ensure that the doll looked to be in better shape, so they wouldn't take it from him and throw it away, maybe just wash it instead.
"Are you sure you're a big boy?" Jungkook frowned at him, he looked so sad and lost too that Jungkook wasn't so sure. Big boys lived in houses and had jobs, they did a lot of adult stuff. Yoongi was lying on the floor like Dooly so maybe he was also lost and broked. He would ask the people to help him.
Finishing off his noodles, he licked his lips and tried to wipe his face, missing most of it but trying his very best.
"Can you really fix Dooly? He's very sick." He looked down at his poor little dino, all broken and dirty. He held him up and over the table, offering him to Yoongi. "Does he look like you can fix him?"
He smelled like garbage but Jungkook didn't mind. Yoongi did too, after all.
Yoongi reached out to pet the doll, looking it over. He nodded his head as he thought about it. "Yes, I can fix him. Then he just needs to be washed and he'll be as good as new." He could give it a decent try, anyway. It wasn't as if he'd have any other use for the sewing kit, the only reason he even had one was that his eomma had always said that when one could sew and cook, one could survive.
It wasn't as if he wanted to survive. But he could help a little boy out and fix his doll. That wouldn't be the worst thing to do with the time he had left.
"He'll be healthier soon, you and him just need to get somewhere nice. With a bed and friends, yeah?"
"Beds are nice. We'll find a place, hyung. Then we'll be somewhere with beds and friends." Jungkook repeated but assuming Yoongi would be with them. He took the doll back into his lap and hugged Dooly close, looking at the lady who came over and placed a mochi down for Jungkook, pinching his cheeks and telling him it was on the house.
Jungkook giggled and bowed. "Thank you, Halmeoni."
Ripping his mochi in half, Jungkook leaned over and held some out to Yoongi. "We should share cause you didn't get one. Open up! I'll feed you, hyung."
"I don't really like mochi so much, Jungkook... How about you have it for hyung? It will make me happy to see you eat it." What a cute kid. No wonder he was getting things for free. Yoongi knew for a fact that he had never been this cute. Maybe that was why his eomma had joked about finding him under a bridge. He wondered what she'd make of him now sleeping under a bridge.
Well, tonight it would be by a Chinese food place, apparently. "Are you full?"
"Uh-huh." Jungkook mumbled around the gooey mochi that made a sticky mess of his hands, It was soon gone and Jungkook tried to clean his hands but hey, he looked like a boy that had a good meal so that was something. He slid carefully out of the chair, holding Dooly's hand in his left hand and holding out his right for Yoongi.
"Come on, hyung. You look like you need a nap. We should put you down to sleep. My eomma says when you're sick, you lie in bed, have some milk and nap." And clearly Yoongi wasn't well. He needed someone to take care of him. "We can nap together, it's safer."
"You're right about that." All of that, really. Yoongi took Jungkook's hand and walked with him, bowing to the woman who owned the shop before exiting with the boy. "My eomma said the same. She'd make soup, usually."
Yoongi remembered the soup recipe. Seemed like a stupid thing to remember, it wasn't as if he was about to ever make it again or if it was even the best soup ever. Just the best thing to have when he was sick. It was nice to remember, he supposed. Something about that life he'd once had. It was already feeling so far away.
"I'll keep you safe, Jungkook. Then, tomorrow, you'll go somewhere nice with Dooly."
"We will. All of us. Maybe we can make soup. You can teach me so I can always make it when you're sick, hyung. It's not nice to be icky." Jungkook remarked as he held onto Yoongi's hand, skipping along content and saying hello to the various people on the street like eomma had taught him to. It was important to be polite. "Cause we're alone so we gotta take care of each other."
He hummed happily to himself, only pausing to look at a big, double decker bus. He made Yoongi stop working, pointing excitedly at the bus. "Look, hyung! That's a really big bus. It's the biggest ever!"
"Oh yeah, it's huge." Yoongi really wanted the boy to stop drawing everyone's attention. Being what he was right now was embarrassing enough when he was just lying in an alley somewhere, actually having a child on his hand and being judged by everyone they passed? Yeah, he was not a fan.
"Do you know where the Chinese food place is?" He just wanted this day to be over.
"Uh... I dunno. By the post office." Of course he didn't know, he was little and in his head, everything was easy to find. He skipped along contently, smiling at people and swinging his hyungs arm. "And the -- the bus stop. There was a bus stop. Do you think the big bus goes to that bus stop, hyung? Maybe it does. Then we can see it and everything."
Jungkook smiled at some older ladies and bowed politely. "Hello! I'm out with my hyung." As he had proudly informed several people today.
"I know where the post office is. That's close to the rec centre anyway, so if we can't find your Chinese food place, we can still sleep there."
Yoongi pulled Jungkook around a corner, down a less lively road. "Sorry, Jungkook, I don't have enough money for a bus."
Right now he was basically down to almost no money. Just enough that he could maybe get Jungkook another meal if he had to. He couldn't let the little boy starve, after all. He already hated that he'd have to sleep on the streets with him.
"That's okay, we don't need a bus." Jungkook reassured him as they wandered around the alleyway networks. It wasn't the best area, lots of dodgy people eyeing them up, lots of yelling and strange men. Jungkook found himself scared and whimpered, clinging to Yoongi's leg and making it very hard to walk.
He was so low down, all the scary people on the floor could look right at him. They could grab him! He didn't want to be grabbed. Whining, he tried to climb up Yoongi.
Yoongi reached down, wrapped his arms around Jungkook and lifted him up, cupping the back of his head to tuck him securely against himself. "Shh, it's fine. We're going to find a good spot somewhere."
Here he was, carrying a small child. Not as if it never happened around here, but now it was him and the thought alone made him anxious. Tomorrow he'd be able to pass him on into capable hands. He could keep him well for a night.
"I'm not really scared. I didn't cry. I just don't like being low down." Jungkook defended himself as he hid against Yoongi's neck, shivering lightly against him. It was going to be a cold night, he was glad that he was going to have Yoongi to keep him safe. He needed his hyung. And that's what Yoongi was. He looked over Yoongi's shoulders bravely. "No one can hurt me cause I have a hyung. He's the strongest and bravest. I bet if someone hurt me, you'd beat them up."
Like all the good hyungs could. He was sure of it.
"I'd beat up the bad hyungs for you too. I can punch really good. We'll keep each other safe. We're big boys."
"Yeah. We'll do that, for tonight. You can have hyung's coat as a blanket and I'll hold you." Together, that should manage to keep the boy somewhat warm. He hoped. He was so not suited for this, he wished he could offer him more. At least he had fed him well, at least he could keep him safe. "I'd beat up anyone for you."
A promise he made immediately, no hesitation there. "But we won't need to beat up anyone. See, doesn't that look like your Chinese food place right there?"
"Yes! There's a panda on the sign, look. It's funny." He nodded his head with a small smile, giggling to himself as he hugged close to Yoongi. "We can sit down in the dry patch and cuddle. You need a nap, hyung. Then you'll feel better. I don't like that you don't feel good. We're brothers so we have to stay healthy and together."
Jungkook had already decided that his hyung was really and truly his hyung and that meant that they would take care of each other and stay together. "Me, you and Dooly." They were family. "Tomorrow you'll feel better and I'll make you soup!"
"I do need a nap." That much was for sure. Yoongi found the dry patch Jungkook indicated and sat down, letting go of the boy so he could undo his coat. "Come cuddle close, Kookie. You are so small, you can fit right in here with me."
Between how little he weighed these days and how big the coat was, that probably was actually possible. He waited for Jungkook to snuggle him, then closed up the coat a little again, hoping that their combined body heat would be enough to keep Jungkook warm all night.
"Comfy, hyung." Warmer than last night for sure. He snuggled, hugging himself against Yoongi and let Dooly get smushed against Yoongi too. Well, at least the thing had no stuffing hardly, it could fit anywhere. "We have to say good night and sweet dreams or we won't have sweet dreams. Okay?"
Jungkook smiled up at his hyung and rested his head on his chest, listening to his heart beat as he closed his eyes. "Good night and sweet dreams."
"Good night and sweet dreams." Yoongi didn't think he was going to have a good night, but at least it would be warmer than last night. And at the very least he thought that Jungkook's night might be a good one, compared to what else could have happened. Tomorrow he could find a better place for him.
