"Honestly, we don't know. They do look alike and neither of them know any father other than their grandfather, there is nothing conclusive on their birth certificates either, so it'd need a test to figure out if they share a father." Which wasn't really a priority right now. "I'll be honest with you. If they stay in a group home, of course the people there will try to help Yoongi, but these places get very busy. Yoongi is a quiet kid, from what I can tell, shy perhaps? And he doesn't complain. It can be tough to stay on top of exercise routine, so experience has taught me that these things tend to slip through the cracks. I'm not sure what would happen."
There was a reason why he was hoping that they would be taken in by Gyungho. Well. Many a reason. Wei Wuxian stopped by the door, turning to Gyungho. "Kangwoo is-- He's cute, honestly, but he doesn't connect with the world much, unless it is through Yoongi. He may not even react to you, but don't take that personally. They've been through a lot. And Yoongi-- He's shy, as I've said. He's kind of funny a lot, honestly, he's made me laugh. And he doesn't think of himself as a child, so just don't talk down to him. Children are smart about these things."
"I think if he's that smart, he'll know what sort of man I am the first moment he meets me so brace yourself. I know you're hoping this might work out still but like I said - I'm a loser." Gyungho just didn't want this guy to get his hopes up when it might be a bit doomed at this point. There was something about being responsible for someone that instant made him want to retreat and hide, he didn't know why he was so afraid to get involved with people but he just always had been. It was tough.
As they came close to the room, Gyungho checked his phone and sent a quick love heart to Minjun because he needed to feel loved right now. This was a lot. He looked up at Wei Wuxian and nodded his head. "Let's try this, shall we? And hey, if it crashes and burns, I'll support them either way financially so don't ever worry about that. I'll be there for them from afar."
"That's also a lot," Wei Wuxian assured him, giving a thumbs up before he walked into the room, leaving the door open for Gyungho to follow. "Hey, how are you doing? Wow, Kangwoo, you've coloured so much more since I left!"
He admired the boy's progress loudly and reached out to gently pet his head, under the watchful eye of Yoongi, who looked guarded and suspicious more than anything. Kangwoo was sitting in Yoongi's bed, colouring in, and Yoongi was upright, his left arm in a sling to keep his shoulder still, leaning against his pillow and keeping one hand on Kangwoo's arm, as if he was scared to lose the contact.
"Yoongi, this is your uncle. Choi Gyungho-ssi." Wei Wuxian gestured at him and Yoongi bent his head a little, not able to properly bow. "He wanted to visit to see how you were doing."
"I don't know - maybe I was bored. I'm usually home alone. I live alone, I sleep alone, I eat and drink alone. It's nice to have company." Gyungho smiled as he came closer and leaned on the rails on the bed, keeping distance so he didn't scare then and dropping into a crouch so he wasn't too big. He didn't want to spook them off by being too tall and scary - that was a bad start. He looked at Yoongi, who was watching him with open suspicion, and then to Kangwoo. Not that Kangwoo had noticed him, he really didn't seem to want to do anything but colour in.
"I'm your uncle or your hyung, however you want to say it. I don't think I'm much of an uncle, I haven't been part of the family for a loooong time."
Over eight years, longer than Kangwoo had been alive. "I hear your shoulder got fucked up." Wait. Oh fuck. He closed his eyes and winced. "Messed up. Not that. Sorry. Shouldn't have cussed, I'm an idiot."
"You can cuss. People do it all the time." And they definitely did it around Yoongi too, so, really, he didn't see the issue. He did glance at Kangwoo though. "I told Kangwoo not to cuss." That was what mattered. Himself, he did cuss sometimes. But he was older, so it was different. "It's not a good family."
So it seemed a lot better to not be part of it. "My shoulder hurts less now. But I can't lie down."
Kinda sucked. "Kang-ah, can you say 'hi' to uncle? He's here."
Kangwoo made a noise in the back of his throat and coloured faster, clearly not happy at the disturbance and not willing to say hi. He hadn't really spoken to anyone but Yoongi since they got here, not Wei Wuxian and not this strange uncle - he didn't want them. He just wanted Yoongi hyung.
"It's okay, he doesn't have to say hi to me." Gyungho didn't let it bother him, he assumed Kangwoo was having trouble with all the changes so he didn't want to push. "I did get something though cause you know, sick boys get gifts. It's sort of the rules."
Gyungho pulled his shoulder bag off and set it onto the floor, being very transparent about it because he didn't want to freak either kid out with sudden movements. He got out the first present and held it out to Yoongi. "It's baby Yoda!" And it was so fucking precious. Minjun had a similar one. "I thought Kangwoo might like it, I heard he liked Star Wars."
'Yoda' and 'Star Wars' made Kangwoo stop colouring.
"Kang-ah! It's Star Wars." Yoongi took the Yoda plushie with his good hand and held it out to Kangwoo, watching his brother's face to make sure he had seen and registered it, then he used it to cuddle up to Kangwoo, so he could see the smile on his face. Then he smiled himself, always so pleased when his brother was happy. "Uncle made Yoda visit you!"
He hummed a bit of the Star Wars theme, while nuzzling Kangwoo with the toy. "Say thank you, all right? Be polite."
Kangwoo squealed and Gyungho was a little afraid he'd fucked up at first but no, that was a happy squeal. Kangwoo wrapped his arms around Yoda desperately and pulled it to his face, rubbing his cheek against the Yoda and making happy sounds. He looked at Yoongi and grinned, happy and excited that he had a Yoda. "Yoda."
He didn't know how to thank uncle or who uncle was, it was scary to talk to other people. He shook his head and then hid against Yoongi, holding Yoda tight. "Yoda..."
"I'll take that as a thank you." Gyungho wasn't going to be too strict on manners, they were kids. "I got it for both of you but I assume Kangwoo will have the closer bond to Yoda, huh? I'll have to get you something next time, Yoongi. Any requests?"
"He means thank you," Yoongi assured his uncle. It was weird to have an uncle. It was even weirder that he talked about next time. He frowned, somewhere between confused and suspicious. "Why next time?"
"Your uncle can come visit more than once, can't he?" Wei Wuxian was trying to help. "Yoongi is a bit too inquisitive, he keeps questioning why I do stuff too." It could be tricky at times, admittedly. "Is there anything you want, Yoongi?"
"I want Kangwoo." That was all he wanted. He had seen too many looks and heard too many snippets of conversation. He wanted to be with his brother.
"I don't mind questions, you can ask anything." Gyungho admitted with a shrug and he tried to think what he was even supposed to say to that request. He wanted his little brother and he just wished it was possible without him. Maybe he could pay someone to foster Yoongi AND Kangwoo. He was sure Minjun would ... well, he might mind, it could be pricey. Maybe his uncle would get back to him and take the boys. "We all want you two to stay together so I'm hopeful you can."
No promises. He didn't like to promise when he couldn't keep it.
He was going to say something more but his phone started to ring and one of Minjun's songs filled the room, catching him off guard. He cursed and fumbled with his phone to reject the call. Kangwoo looked at Yoongi curiously. "GD." He knew GD. They always listened to that.
"Uh-huh, that's GD's song, you're right!" Yoongi felt anxious, very anxious, about having it confirmed that him and Kangwoo might be separated. Life hadn't given him much reason to be optimistic. However, he wasn't sure what to do about it now and then the music played and Kangwoo was looking at him, so he latched onto that and smiled a little, moving as much as he could without agitating his shoulder. "You like this song, right?"
He sang a bit of the song he remembered off the top of his head. "GD is cool!"
"You like GD?" Of course they did, they were kids. Gyungho quickly sent a message to Sangwoo that he couldn't answer his phone right now and looked at Yoongi, bouncing his brother along as Kangwoo smiled to himself and cuddle Yoda.
"GD hyung." GD hyung was happy music. Yoongi Hyung played him to drown out bad noise that made everything no. Even if sometimes GD was too loud, he liked his voice. It was fun music. It meant hyung was happy.
"I like GD too. Uncle knows him, actually. We work together sometimes. And live together sometimes." He gave Wei Wuxian a sideways look, as if he was afraid to say too much in case Wei Wuxian ran out and posted about it. "Maybe next time I come, I can bring his new album." His new secret album no one knew about.
"You know GD?" Yoongi paused, a frown on his face again. Suspicious, of course he was. "Why do you know GD? You're just an uncle."
He had only just met his uncle, but still, an uncle was an uncle, not someone cool like GD. Even if the uncle looked kind of fancy. Huh. "Are you lying?"
Seemed likely, honestly. "Is there a new album?" He didn't know, but he didn't have any internet here. So he looked at Wei Wuxian curiously, who just shrugged.
He gave Wei Wuxian a sideways look. Okay, the dude had definitely googled him then. Well, whatever. He came closer to Yoongi but kept as much distance as he could, opening his phone and showing the boy his lock screen. "That's me and Minjun in Japan, we went last month. He had a tour, I had a job, we partied a lot." Good times, he smiled to himself as he opened his gallery and showed off some pictures of them just dicking around, careful what he showed them.
"See, you know, your grandpa, my appa, he wasn't very nice to me either..." Gyungho started as he turned off his phone and put it away carefully. "He told me I was never, ever allowed back to the family when you were just a baby. I had to make money and all I had was a camera. I got pretty good at it, so much so that I met GD one day. Minjun-ah. We've been close ever since. I'm very lucky."
Minjun was there for him at his worst. He was lucky to have had that. The support. Yoongi didn't have that, didn't he?
"...wow." Yoongi said nothing for a few, because he was trying to wrap his mind around that. This man had really met GD. And this man was his uncle. And he was really here. He shook his head, unable to really believe it, even after having seen the picture. "He's really, really amazing! He can rap and dance and sing and he does his own music and writes his own lyrics, it's so cool, he is an artist, not just an idol! And he has really cool fashion too."
"That's the most I've ever heard you talk, Yoongi," Wei Wuxian observed with amusement, laughing a little, "Looks like your uncle is really cool, huh?"
"You're SO lucky. Kang-ah, uncle knows GD! They are friends." How weird was that? "...can I get his autograph?"
"Sure, I'll bring one when I come next time. I'm sure he'll be a big fan of you too. I haven't told him about you yet. He's hard to talk to right now, he's working really hard. Hence why Sangwoo called me." Sangwoo often collabed with Minjun and they were close, professional and socially, but he often called Gyungho when Minjun was getting too stress. Sometimes Minjun just needed his boyfriend to tell him to breathe.
With a smile, Gyungho looked at Wei Wuxian and shrugged. "I told you I was a loser but I'm a well connected loser. So there is that."
Turning back to Yoongi, he shrugged his shoulders. "I would bring him here but then all the press would come and I don't think little Kangwoo would like." Kangwoo was chewing on Yoda's ear and staring at the wall near Gyungho so that was progress.
"That is scary. I don't wanna be famous like that..." He had given it thought before. "It's better to just write music, then no one takes pictures." At least that was what Yoongi thought. He still felt giddy inside now and he wasn't quite sure what to do with it. He had not expected to meet someone who knew his idol today! And was his uncle, whatever, big whoop. He knew GD. He might tell him about him? He wanted to squeal the way Kangwoo did, but that was something for babies. "Are you really coming back, uncle? You don't have to."
But now he wanted him to.
"Your uncle would like to get to know you two a bit, Yoongi. He said he'd like to help you out with money too."
Huh. "If I have money, can I pay rent? Cause then Kangwoo and I can live together."
"You can't live by yourself, you are too young for that."
"The money would mostly help for education and medical bills. Your shoulder is going to need a lot of help, isn't it? So we best invest." Gyungho didn't know why it felt so good inside to have Yoongi look at him and want him to come back - to look at him like he was a cool adult who would help and not just some loser crowding his space. He supposed he really did want some family validation. How sad of him. "I want to make sure you're both taken care of."
And now, somehow, he was going to have to find a way to keep them together.
He frowned and looked at the ceiling, cycling through names of people he knew. Could he convince Jiho and Jin to adopt another two trouble kids? Maybe Sangwoo was ready to settle down? ... Boseo-- no, God no. Boseon was not allowed near his nephews.
"I'm going to see what I can do." Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck. He was invested. Fuck. "We won't let them split you up."
"I can earn some money. I'm good at washing dishes and I can cook too." Mostly cook ramen, but still. Yoongi was determined to help, if that would mean that him and Kangwoo could stay together. He smiled at Gyungho, a little bit hopeful, his heart beating very fast. He really did want to believe him. "Are you really my uncle? You look like in a movie."
He was all handsome and fancy, it was weird. He didn't look like eomma at all. He wasn't smelly either.
"Yeah, I'm your uncle. I just know how to dress to make myself look all fancy and important. I ain't, promise." He smiled playfully and then very tentatively, he sat on the edge of the bed so he could be a bit closer to Yoongi. He looked through his photos on google, going as far back as he could to the folders he never liked looking at.
He carefully cropped Yoongi's mother out as he showed a picture of him holding a baby. "See, look, that's you. I was there the year you were born. I got you this dope shirt with MADE on it. You know, Crayon's whole brand. You were so swaggy. And look at you now, you still are. I can see it, you got it but you're not at your best. That's okay, won't last."
He wished he didn't care but damn it, he did. Of course he did. Damn Wei Wuxian, he knew what he was doing. "You're strong, right? Like uncle."
Yoongi nodded, a determined look on his face. He reached out to touch the phone, but then touched Gyungho's hand instead, although he kept his eyes on the screen. He didn't want to look at his face right then, but it was kind of nice to hold someone's hand. Usually it was just Kangwoo holding his. "I'm strong like uncle."
He would be. And he had been a little baby once! He did look at that picture in awe. "Look, Kang-ah, that's hyung as a baby. Do you want to see baby hyung?"
He was smiling a bit. "Such a cool shirt. Look, baby hyung is dressed like GD."
Kangwoo shuffled a little closer, careful not to touch or get too close to Gyungho. He stuck to Yoongi like glue as he peered at the phone. "Baby." It was baby hyung. He giggled and looked at Yoongi, he was a baby in the picture. How? That was so silly! "Baby hyung?"
"He's not a baby now, just here. You're a big kid, right? Real cool." He let Yoongi touch his hand and exited the picture, scrolling through his older stuff until he found one of him as a teenager. "This is uncle when he was younger."
"Fat." Kangwoo mumbled, his lack of filter shining through. Gyungho just laughed, clearly not upset.
"I know, right? That's why I started jogging." He looked at Yoongi and smiled. "I'm way better now, right? Though I did give real good hugs then."
"We do hugs. With Kangwoo." Like he hugged Kangwoo right now too. Not as tightly as he usually might, since he only had one arm, but Kangwoo had accepted that by now and it was all right. Although it was funny to see Gyungho looking so different. "You look like a dumpling."
He had to laugh. It was funny. "Do you hug a lot? Now they'd be less soft hugs..."
"I hug about the same, I guess." Gyungho wasn't sure, he only really did physical contact with Minjun. Well, serious contact. He did sit on Boseon from time to time and play fight with Sangwoo but he never really got cuddly. That was for Minjun only. Though maybe he'd have to change that. He reached out, slow and careful, being very transparent as he reached up and gently stroked Yoongi's hair from his face. It was so long, he and Kangwoo both needed haircuts. They were very unkempt boys, when was the last time anyone took care of them?
"I never thought about it, my hugs. We could test. If you want to, you could help me out. I could hug you, really carefully because of your shoulder, and you can tell me if it's still good. If you wanna." He didn't want to pressure him but there was something in Yoongi's eyes.
A sort of eagerness, despite his fear. "Or you can do it next time. Uncle would love to know so it'd be a big help."
"...I dunno." Could it be a trap? Yoongi didn't think so, but he wasn't sure. He looked at Wei Wuxian, who was just leaning against the wall and offering an encouraging smile. It was probably all right, wasn't it? Because uncle seemed nice and he had seen him hug GD in the pictures too and GD was a good person, he knew that. "Kang-ah, uncle can hug. We can tell him if it's good."
Maybe that was a good idea. "The shoulder doesn't hurt much, uncle, you can hug." There, he'd be brave.
