"Thank you but I know I failed. I'm sorry, hyung. I did try my best." No one was harder on Jungkook than himself. He was a perfectionist, he liked to be perfect and to have everything go his way but that was a rare outcome. And he had trouble facing that sometimes. He followed after Yoongi to his car, rubbing his sore knuckles to try and ease the pain out of them.
"I'm glad we finally got the names though. I can't wait to find the person who ratted on us and end them." How could anyone betray Yoongi-hyung? He was a fair and honourable boss? He hated disloyalty.
"If we find them. Your friend Tae is about as helpful when he is trying as he is when he isn't helpful." Yoongi shook his head, still not sure whether he was more amused or frustrated on the whole. "What does 'like lizard eyes' even mean?"
It was not a helpful descriptor, he knew that much. But still, it was better than nothing. He let Jungkook get into the car first, then followed behind him. Of course, him and Namjoon had a plan or two about how to get to the rat, but he wasn't sharing that with the class, not even Jungkook. Unnecessary risk. "Show me your hands."
He'd noticed him rubbing them, he just wanted to make sure they were all right.
"I don't know, he's so weird. Are you sure he isn't the crazy one? Jimin seems way more normal." Tae was constantly saying weird stuff and hurting himself, seemed pretty crazy to him. Jungkook climbed into the car and put his seat belt on, frowning at Yoongi's request. "Uh, sure thing, Yoongi-hyung."
He held out his hands and they were pretty swollen. He'd tried icing them but he'd not only hit Tae today but the wall a few times out of frustration. His knuckles were pretty skinned too.
"I should hope so, because they look like they hurt a lot." Yoongi narrowed his eyes and thought for a moment. "Go see a doctor about them, I want this healing fast." Mostly just because he was worried about him, but might as well make it sound as if he needed him to be useful. "I'll get you fingerless gloves. Maybe brass knuckles, when you really want to cause damage. It's bad practise to hurt yourself this much when you beat someone up."
Not that he hadn't hurt Tae worse than this, but still. "Anyway. Tae's a little shit. Father beat him all his life, kids like that always either break or find a coping mechanism. You could have beat him to a pulp and he'd have still just given you attitude. Probably a kind of crazy, but he doesn't have a diagnosis going on."
"I'm very sorry, hyung. I'll see a doctor tomorrow morning." God damn it, he tried his best and he still fucked up and disappointed Yoongi. He was going to have to try his best to be smarter in future. It was bad practise to hurt himself so he wouldn't do it again. "I'll get gloves next time."
Jungkook sighed and lowered his head. "How does Namjoon-hyung do it? He gets people to trust him so easily. And he's just a giant dork." Maybe that worked for him? Maybe being a dork was his secret weapon. "He was barely with them for half an hour and he got the names."
"I'll buy you the gloves. You just don't take enough care of yourself." Now it sounded like criticism again when he'd actually meant to take care of him and reward him, so great going there. He'd just have to find really expensive and cool-looking gloves to properly bring his point across. This is what he needed Namjoon for.
Speaking of... "He's a different kind of person. You can't be like Namjoon." Yoongi had made his peace with that long ago. "Besides, I didn't tell you to befriend them. If I had, maybe you'd have gotten the names too. I also don't think Tae would have given in as quickly if you hadn't done the prep work. You need a bad cop for a good cop to work."
Basically the foundation of how he and Namjoon worked.
"I'll take care of myself better." Jungkook crossed his arms, hiding his hands from sight and considering how best to move forward. He just had to take care of himself, be more cautious and try not to get himself hurt when fighting. Not too difficult. He could take that on board and try his best with it. He wanted to make Yoongi proud. He'd known him for so long and he'd always wanted to be by his side and work for him. Even when he was really young.
Now he had the chance, he wasn't going to fuck it up. "I'm glad I could help. At least we got the names. I'm glad, I don't want there to be a rat in our kingdom. We're a powerhouse, we don't need any weak links."
"We'll find them." Whoever it was. Yoongi trusted his closest circle and now he wondered if he trusted too many people. Of course he trusted Namjoon, but everyone else? He just didn't know. Jungkook was too low down, for now, to be a candidate for being the rat, so at least he could trust him.
"I know I told you that you could have that Tae kid when we're done, but for one thing he might still have valuable information and for another Namjoon is filling out adoption papers, so I can't do that." Honestly, if Namjoon got his will it was more likely that Jungkook might have to work with him eventually, so here was hoping that would go well. "But you still deserve a reward, we wouldn't have tracked down these two idiots or the coke without you. What do you want?"
"I really don't want that kid around me long term. Does Namjoon have to like them? Look, if I have to be stuck with any of them, can I have Jimin? He seems easier." Just as loud and needy but probably easier to beat down into submission. Jungkook didn't have time to play games and that's all Tae seemed to want to do.
"I'm glad I could help, that's reward enough for me. I always like to be useful, hyung." It wasn't a lie, he was always desperate to be useful and loved. Ever since he was little, that was all he wanted. "I mean, if I have to have a reward... I don't know. Give me some fingerless gloves." Jungkook laughed and beamed at Yoongi. Well, he suggested them.
"I don't know. Jimin is probably not that suited for our kind of work." Couldn't exactly risk a disassociative episode in the middle of a shoot-out or however that worked. "Tae might be different when you aren't beating him up. Maybe he'll grow on you."
Yoongi shrugged his shoulders and then looked at Jungkook, unable to keep from smiling. He was still cute, it was always nice to see a reminder of that. "I was going to give them to you anyway, you brat." He leaned forward and ruffled Jungkook's hair. "I'll think of something. I don't mind people knowing that I like you when you give me reason to."
He just couldn't favour him solely because he was a cute kid and he adored him. Even if that might be true.
Jungkook laughed loudly, validated and happy, leaning back in his seat with a much more relaxed attitude. He loved to make Yoongi proud of him and he loved when they could just have fun together. He missed that a lot. These days, Yoongi and Namjoon had to be serious, they were always working and they had to keep distance. For obvious reasons.
It was just a shame for Jungkook. He loved being around those two, he always had. "I'll handle Tae if I have to but I really don't want to. I want a cooler partner, you know? Someone more badass."
"He wouldn't be your partner anyway, unless he impresses me a lot more. You could boss him around." Maybe that was more appealing? "Anyway, sometimes it's better not to have someone badass. Look at Namjoon."
Who could, to be fair, come across as badass to the uninitiated. But Jungkook knew them well enough to know what bullshit that was. "Sometimes it's better to have someone who balances you out in some ways."
"I get that. You and Namjoon-hyung are so balanced. He always told me he was your conscience and I never got it. I think I do these days." And he was pretty proud of that, finally understanding it. He smiled softly and turned his head, taking a risk and leaning in against Yoongi. He liked being touched by him, he was still so needy, even if he tried not to be.
"I'm glad I get to work for you and Namjoon. You're by far the best gangsters."
"Can't imagine we have that much competition for that title." Yoongi let Jungkook lean against him, though he resisted the urge to wrap an arm around him. However, he did eventually reach out and pet his hair a little. He supposed it couldn't hurt to show affection, they weren't in public and Jungkook had definitely earned it. "Remember not to let it slip that Tae and Jimin are still alive. It's best if people think they are dead. For now."
He exhaled slowly, leaning his head back. "You should help me find Namjoon a date."
"I won't tell anyone." He knew when business was serious and he knew how to keep it down. He smirked a little and laughed, his laugh not overly pleasant. "Oh yeah, let's find Namjoon a pretty boyfriend!" They all knew Namjoon was gay, it was pretty damn obvious. And Jungkook was pretty excited. "Let's make him a grindr."
"I want to find him someone to date, not just get him laid. He could do that by himself. Maybe." It was a bit questionable, Namjoon wasn't the best at intentionally flirting. But he'd pulled before, so he wasn't saying it was impossible. "He wants someone more normal. Vanilla. Not part of the business, anyway." He just knew Namjoon needed a break from the violence sometimes.
"So he wants a nice normal guy? A nice normal guy who's probably rich and handsome." Just saying. He doubted that Namjoon cared but they did. They didn't want Namjoon to just date some losers. Screw that. "Let's make him a dating profile and find someone nice and normal. Then he can play house when he's not playing gangster."
"I don't know if he has any idea what he wants, but that's what I think he wants. Someone sweet, someone he can have a conversation with. Someone I can have a conversation with, by preference, because I wanted to shoot that last loser." Which wasn't really the best way to get Namjoon hooked up. "Namjoon won't want to lie though, so the boy needs to be okay with this side of things too. More reason for someone rich, they're all crooked anyway. And look-wise, sure. He always says he doesn't care, but you know he is weak for a pretty face. Shallow ass."
"Let's see if we can find a corrupt, sexy young CEO to seduce for him. That's basically a home run for him." He smiled over at Yoongi, determined to find the right sort of guy for Namjoon. Even if it killed them. "I bet we can do it, can't be that hard. I'll start researching tonight! I'll tell you what I find." Because that was the most fun job he'd had in a long time. "This is going to be fun."
