"You gotta lot of dreams, Minjun. I'll help you any way I can but I can only help so much. I got no powers, no assess and people don't respect me. I can only do what I can." He knew he was kind of useless but what other option did he have but to support his friend? "If you need me, I'll be there. And no one would protect you like I would." He raised his beer to Minjun and smiled. "I got your back."
"You may have magic, you know?" Minjun looked at him, frowning. "I mean... The only reason that I found my own potential is because I looked up how to do it, studied and then I learned. I could actually help you. If you wanted to see if you had the potential." The thought hadn't occurred to him before, but...
"There's no reason you'd not have magic, just like me. Maybe even more powerful."
"I won't have magic. Guys like me don't. I mean, come on, you can't get more average than this. I'm literally... I dunno, I couldn't even work out where to start." He looked at the book and then stared at it for a while before pointing at one symbol. "That's an s. Ssss." He knew that cause his second name was Sangwoo and it started with a Sss noise. "S for Sangwoo."
Nodding wisely, Sangwoo turned to Minjun. "We'd be here all day if I tried to learn this shit."
"You don't have to read. Magic isn't about stuff like that. Look, come on. You trust me, right?"
Minjun turned to Sangwoo and stepped close to him, then he lifted Sangwoo's shirt a little, enough to get a hand on his chest. He looked at him, lowering his voice. "Close your eyes, all right?"
Maybe he could do this. Guide someone through meditation.
"Are you seducing me cause I know I had the weird waffle dream but ... I ain't into you." Even so, he huffed out a sigh and closed his eyes, trying to refocus. He took a breath and tried not to feel stupid... but he did feel stupid. He'd rather try to read that stand here, eyes closed, his best friend touching his chest.
"...What do I do now? If you kiss me, I will punch you."
"I won't kiss you. Now hush. Just focus, listen." Minjun rolled his eyes, but then he tried to focus himself. Tried to remember how he had done this. Maybe it would be easier for Sangwoo. He had had to rationalise it, think his way through it before he could finally unlock things. Maybe for Sangwoo it would be different. "Don't think. Just feel. Imagine the sun. The light, the heat. Imagine it coming from your heart."
To help along, Minjun conjured up his own magic. Maybe that could help, it was said that magic could enhance itself."
"Okay." Sangwoo did, he hadn't had much time in the sun in his life but when he had, it had been perfect. He pictured the one time he'd been able to just lay around in the sun and do nothing - he had been a kid there, lying alone in the park while the other kids played. He loved how warm it got. He kept that image in his head and then imagined that he swallowed the sun and it went down his throat and to his chest.
"Okay, did it." He imagined it... was it over? Could he open his eyes yet?
"Yeah. Just.. Sang-ah? Look down." Minjun slowly withdrew his hand and he saw it still, right above Sangwoo's heart. The glow. That had been the first sign he had seen as well. "Magic. That's yours. In you."
And he felt no envy that it might have come easier to him. He just felt happy. They had been friends forever. There was nothing he didn't want to share with Sangwoo. "Can you feel it still?"
"Uh, feels warmer?" Sangwoo looked down and pulled a face, unsure how to feel. He raised his hand to try and cover it but the light stayed there. Huh, what did he do now? He tried to imagine that he flipped the sun off switch and slowly, the light flickered, dimmed and went away. "The fuck."
That was crazy. He didn't look like he believed it still. He looked up at Minjun, so baffled. "Since when was I magic?"
"Since always. You just didn't know. Same with me. It's limited magic, but it is magic. You can try now, like... When I do this." He turned his hand and focused. "You know, bring up the light. I think about it and it just... I mean, in my case, I tend to think about it from a scientific point of view, but really..."
The light was there and he glanced at Sangwoo. "Just see if you can do it."
"You lost me at scientific." A little thrown by the idea of science, he overthought it trying to think all smart like and work out how a light worked... and realised that he did not know. He frowned and nothing happened so he shrugged and turned to Minjun, happy to give up. He was not too invested in doing this. "Think it was a fluke. I mean, like, you know... I dunno how lights work."
How did he make one appear in his hand? "I can imagine the sun but lights are like-- I guess I could imagine something easier."
"Yeah, you have to go with what works for you. Don't overthink it. It's really more about feeling. My magic seems to be strongest when I let my emotions guide me." Which was great for him, because he might be a thinker, but he was really someone who wanted to listen to his heart more than anything. Romantic view of the world, perhaps, but Minjun felt this world needed dreamers. And room for those dreams to come true. "What are you imagining?"
"I'm imagining the time my sister didn't get a lot for her birthday so I told her I'd get her a star from the sky for her next one." He opened his eyes again and looked down and yeah, there was a little ball of light there. Sangwoo smiled and looked at Minjun. "See, this is way cooler than what I actually got her that year."
He put a tea light in a jar covered in paper and told her it was inside. She bought it cause she wanted to, not cause she believed it was actually one. "That worked way better."
"Damn. You are a natural." Minjun laughed suddenly, pulling his friend into a hug. It was amazing, getting to share it with someone. He really did love magic, he had always been fascinated by it. "Sang-ah! You probably have a soulmate too, for real. If magic comes to you like that. Maybe we already knew each other in a prior life too."
Which was a good thought to have. Any life without Sangwoo seemed sad.
"Cool, good for us." He'd be bored without him. With a half smile. he wrapped his arms around Minjun and held him tight for a few moments before pulling away and giving Minjun a playful shove. "This is just between you and me though. People would freak if they knew I had powers. They already won't let me do stuff, imagine if they knew I could be dangerous." He'd never be able to go anywhere!
A black mark with powers? That was bad. "Keep it hush hush and we'll just -- not do a lot with it. I don't need to do anything amazing with my life so... it's cool by me."
"You are amazing. Now you have a light to prove it." Minjun smiled, shaking his head as he returned to the book. "I'm not telling anyone. But I'm just saying, you are more than they want you to be. That just proves my point. That's why they want to keep people small."
He saw this as a win already, definitely made him even more convinced that he was doing the right thing. "I'll find out how to find my soulmate. Don't you want to do it too? To me it feels... It feels like part of me is missing."
"I dunno, I guess I just don't think about it much." Which is why he was pretty content - he didn't think. He supposed now he'd have to try and notice how he felt. "I guess but I always feel like I'm missing shit cause I usually am. Like pay or a non-leaky roof or my waterproofs." Did he miss someone he never even knew?
Was that possible? "God... I hope it's a he. And I hope he's hot." Then he'd have better dating chances. "He'll have to want me if he's my soul mate so-- here's hoping I get a date out of this."
"Yeah. From all I've ever read, any accounts and all that, the attraction is always there. Even if there's reasons you can't or don't want to be together, part of you will be drawn to him. Or her. Inevitably. So, say, if it was a girl? I guess it wouldn't be sexually, but it would feel right. You'd love her, in a way." Minjun frowned as he considered it, then smirked. "I mean, don't get me wrong. I'm hoping for a handsome guy too."
"Well, we are a bunch of queers, of course we want that." Smirking, Sangwoo finished his beer and tossed it into the can, stretching out a little before looking at Minjun. "So, while you study your nerd book, I'm gonna work out and drink some beers. So get back on it, learn all you wanna learn and then we can head off before it's too late."
He wanted to walk Minjun back to the end of his side of town anyway. It was dodgy this time of night.
