"Just six hours so far and it's been pretty easy-going. No major catastrophe yet, until you walked in. I have you scheduled for x-rays, for your hand, your foot and you tell me right now if anything else hurts you or I'll step on your toe." Jin said the threat very seriously, then turned to smile at a patient out for a walk down the hallway. "Mrs Lee, you are looking well!"
He got a smile back and immediately turned to Namjoon again, lowering his voice. "I'm not letting you leave without this, Namjoon. I can cover you if you need it. Don't make Tae worry about you."
That was just emotional manipulation, but it tended to work. Tae looked worried now, hugging Namjoon tightly.
"I still can't believe you actually gave in and came here. It must hurt a lot, huh?"
"My foot-- No, come on, that is not a real injury. I hit it on my dresser. You're being a baby." Namjoon had so many injuries but he treated them the same way he treated a lot of his dad's beatings. Just whatever he could pull together at home. He remembered being at school and getting Jin to bandage some of those... he kind of regretted that on hindsight. Probably made him worry.
"Look, just -- my boyfriend was on me over it too. Between you, him and Tae, it's just ... I dunno. Easier to handle it and prove to you all that I'm fine." He would move his finger a tiny bit already so it couldn't be broken... right?
He felt Tae stiffen a little in his hold and kissed his forehead, soft and gentle. "What are you so worried about? Hyung is fine. You know how Jin-hyung gets all worried." He stuck his tongue out playfully then looked up at Jin. "It doesn't hurt that much."
It did. "I always feel like a faker whenever I go to these places. You know? People are hurt and I'm here, taking up time."
"I'm not being a baby. I'm being a doctor. I know that you can deal with pain, but you don't have to any more, Namjoon. Please listen to me..." Huh. "Or to your boyfriend, apparently."
Interesting. Jin moved Namjoon further down the hallway and finally stopped by a door, knocking it. "See, I wasn't sure about your boyfriend, but now I've made up my mind. He's great, he can curse in his songs if he feels he has to, as long as he gets you to take care of yourself finally."
"Please do it," Tae instructed his hyung, trying to sound strict. "No ow ow for you."
"No ow ow," Jin agreed, "And you are the opposite of a faker. Please tell the nice man every place that hurts and we can get you sorted." The door was opened and they walked in, Jin immediately talking to the guy inside in doctor jargon. Tae was fascinated.
Namjoon set Tae down on the floor and laughed a little, crouching down beside him so he could talk to him. "No more ow ow's for Namjoonie, yeah? Stay here and be a good boy, don't mess with anything and don't get worried if I make any noises cause I'm not hurt, it's just that these guys always have cold hands." He fake shivered playfully, trying to make Tae laugh.
Smiling at Jin, he jerked his head towards Tae, hoping the other could keep an eye on him.
The x-ray went ... painfully. He couldn't even get his finger into the right position because of how badly it was messed up but luckily he was in a room separated with glass from Tae so he didn't properly hear him cursing in pain. His toe wasn't much better. Or his knee. He had to have that looked at because the doctor said it felt swollen.
After three different things being xrayed, he came back down and over to Tae instantly. "Hey, buddy, all scanned. You can see all my bones and stuff. Icky!"
Tae had spent most of the time curled up against Jin and pretending like he wasn't crying, so Jin had told him a story and then kind of just ended up reciting his shopping list, just to keep talking. But once Namjoon was back, Tae got off Jin's lap and went over to Namjoon, frowning at him. "Can I touch you?"
Or would he just break?
"We should go to the break room, huh? While we wait for the x-rays, it won't be that long." Jin glanced at his watch. He could go home, but he didn't want to leave these two alone, not with Tae obviously fragile and, he imagined, Namjoon being the same, just hiding it better. "Then you can show me that music video again. Clearly I need to get on this Agust D appreciation train."
"Ooh, it's fine. Don't look at me like that. You can touch my stupid body anywhere." He lifted Tae up and turned his head, smiling a little at Jin. His appreciation was obvious. "Thanks for watching him. He worries, lots of bad memories." For both of them. It wasn't good for him to be alone here so the longer Jin could keep Tae from losing it, the better. He didn't want to imagine what would happen if he was alone. "Let's go get a hot drink, hmm?"
Holding Tae, he walked along and grinned at Jin, unable to help himself. "Last week you told me Agust D was a bad influence on Jimin and the music was 'rude and loud'. And now you love him cause he made me get an x-ray. You're so easily swayed, huh?"
Adjusting Tae, he winced silently as he caught his finger, hiding it from his brother by turning away. "Hey, TaeTae, tell Jin what your favourite Agust D song is."
Tae frowned, because he had to think about it for a while, but finally he made up his mind, saying it quietly, but very sure of himself. "The Last. That song makes me cry! Sometimes. It's not weak to cry."
"I know it's not. You know your hyung, TaeTae, I cry all the time." Jin laughed a little and then looked at Namjoon as they made their way to the break room. "What do you mean, easily swayed. I've been trying to get you to take care of yourself since I met you. If this guy can magically make you do it, that's a miracle. Nothing easy about that. He's nice to you? I like him."
"He was very insistent and I don't like to -- I mean, he just got to know me and apparently he doesn't think it's funny like I do. Gonna try and hide how much I suck, yeah?" He set Tae down on the couch and ruffled his hair, smiling down at him and pulling out his phone, offering it out. "Wait right here, hyung is gonna get some juice for you and a coffee for himself. You just get the MV up, yeah? We'll show Jin."
He took Jin aside and switched to a more serious tone, trying to talk quietly so Tae didn't hear. "The guy who scanned me, he said this might all take a while, it's kinda bad. Apparently the finger I hurt before broke and set wrong, I didn't realise it was broke so I stopped caring about it. Then I fucked this one up ... so he said we'd probably have to break it and set both together cause the other definitely looks just as fucked too." Yeah, no, this wasn't great. He was a mess.
"It's gonna take a few and I need someone here with Tae. Can you maybe stay? I know it's a big ask."
"You don't even have to ask." Jin wrapped an arm around Namjoon and pulled him close, deciding to simply hold him for a while. He had a feeling he could use it. "I'll stay with Tae and he can sleep here if he gets tired. Don't even dare worry about it. You have to worry about yourself."
He finally let go and smiled a bit. "I really am glad you have someone you are willing to listen to telling you to do this. That's so good. Namjoon, your body doesn't deserve being mistreated, all right? You deserve the best. And if you have an international superstar footing your hospital bill, that's a pretty good deal."
"I dunno. It's not that I don't want to be well, I just really hate being here." It took him back to some unpleasant memories and it wasn't very nice. "I hate scaring Tae too. You saw him, he was crying, I just -- this is all so stressy. I should just be less clumsy." With a small, nervous smile, he half hugged Jin and then filled up some juice from the vending machine, grabbing a cup so he could get coffee too.
"I'm lucky to have someone pushing me, I guess. I'm kind of used to ignore you and Hobi, it's not that I don't care what you think but it's a habit. With him, it's just harder, you know?" Way harder to justify his bullshit. "I'm glad you like my boyfriend, hyungie."
He pulled the dumbest grin ever. "Mommy and daddy approve of my bae."
"I'm really glad he's pushing you. Whatever it takes. If it's a rapper, at least it's a nice one." 'Nice' definitely ranked over 'good' or 'successful' for Jin, in this context. He wanted someone who took good care of Namjoon, because he needed that. "Between having your fridge repaired and this, I'm ready to call him my son in law."
Jin was joking, of course. He had no idea whether there was any kind of future for Namjoon and his rapper, given everything, but he found himself rooting for them.
"Aww, you cutie." He reached forward to pinch Jin's cheek, disrespectful as always, heading back over to give Tae his juice. He lied a little to him, told him he was better off than he looked but he had to sign forms and do boring adult stuff. He left Tae and Jin watching Agust D MVs and lyric vids as he went back out to see the doctor.
It took a few hours to get everything treated, sorted and bandaged up. When he finally got back to the break room, he had two fingers wrapped and cast together with a splint and he was missing a shoe because his foot was wrapped up. Stupid fractured toe. So bulky. He tossed his his shoe at Jin and then held his hands out with a smile.
Tae was very, very sleepy, but he wasn't one to really get cranky when sleepy, mostly just very quiet, which was unusual for him. Maybe the hospital atmosphere added to that, reminding him of the past. He smiled at Namjoon, inspecting him carefully and touching his hand, frowning at his fingers. "Do I get to sign it?"
"Good to know you have your priorities in order, TaeTae. What's with your knee, Namjoon? All good?" Jin would definitely talk to his doctor later. "By the way, we have now watched everything ever about Agust D and I have decided that he's good enough for you."
He held Namjoon's shoe and checked his watch. "Do you want me to drive you home? I'm still awake enough, don't worry."
"My knee has a brace but it's under my pants. I just screwed it up a little but I'm fine." He'd tell Jin the real deets later when Tae wasn't here. "You can sign my cast, bud. First guy who can. You get the honour." He reached out and came over, lifting his boy up and holding him close, rubbing his back to try and soothe him. "You were so brave today, TaeTae. My big, brave boy. I'm going to get you a treat tomorrow for waiting so nicely with Jin-hyung."
He turned to Jin and followed slowly, holding Tae and limping along cause of his foot. It was awkward but he knew Tae was probably really tired so he made it work.
"If we could get a lift, I'd love it. Then you gotta get home to Jiminie."
"Can my treat be sleeping and playing games and no doing stuff?" That seemed like the best treat to Tae right now, as he yawned. "And I'll bring you stuff, cause you are ow."
"Yes, I will. Luckily Hobi had time to watch him, so it's not so bad. He loves Hobi." Everyone did. Jin wanted to carry Tae for Namjoon, but decided against it since he knew that things right now would be delicate. Luckily with a key card it wasn't far to the nearest lift that would take them down to the garage, but he frowned before getting in.
"We'll nap and make Hobi do all our cooking for us cause we can be soooo lazy." Namjoon agreed. Everything tomorrow was no. They were gonna have a pyjama party and never move. Yawning, he turned his head and frowned at Jin. "Do I need one?" The guy had said yes and gave Namjoon one but he ditched it in the hall, seemed awkward to use one and carry Tae but now Jin was asking and he was too tired to fight any more.
"I thought a crutch was just a suggestion..." Whoops. He shrugged. "Whatever, do as you please."
A rare thing he said to Jin but both boys were tired and slumped, ready for bed.
"Come on, TaeTae, let's get your brother a crutch." Jin took Tae from Namjoon, who did readily wrap his arms around him and when he made his way down the hallway, a nurse was already there to hand him the crutch Namjoon had so conveniently forgotten. He rolled his eyes and headed back, letting Tae hold the crutch, which entertained the little guy.
Then he handed the crutch to Namjoon and finally they could use the elevator. "I will bring you two food tomorrow, I'm making a lot anyway. So don't you worry about a thing."
And Hobi wouldn't do any cooking either, cause no one wanted that. Least of all Hobi. "Now you tell your boyfriend what shape you are in, thank him for making you go and then you both just go straight to bed."
"Okay, appa." Namjoon teased. It had always been the way. Hobi was his fake mom and Jin played the role of dad. He never fondly called his father anything but the formal title, it was nice to have someone to joke around with like that, even if he was only a few years older. He used the crutch to steady himself and smiled at Jin, soft and tired.
"Thank you for everything, hyung. You're too good to me." Every time. He didn't know how he got by without him. "I'll tell Yoongi you adore him."
