Kangwoo was usually fine by himself, he had lived alone for a while now and it hadn't overly bothered him much. He knew how to get food, he knew where to not go and he understood when he keep quiet and when to snarl at people. It was an easy life in the forest, everything was awfully simple and he didn't have that many fears, not truly.
Until the storm came. At first it just rained. He was used to rain but this wasn't just rain, this was an intense downpour that drenched him so much, his clothes stuck to him and the shelters proved useless. He whimpered lightly and tried to hide by the thunder and lightening were making it hard to think - it was too loud and too much.
The final straw was when one of the trees near him was struck and a burning chunk of tree fell down, glowing red and spreading to the grass.
Kangwoo turned and ran, heading as fast as he could out of the forest and just running blindly. He had a habit of that, he was always someone who ran when scared, he couldn't control it. As he got up the hill, he saw shelter in the distance and ran towards it, jumping when more lightening stuck behind him. Looking around the shelter, he peered around as he tried to find a door or an entrance. He found a small window that was floor level and not properly closed, wriggling his way through the frame as best he could. He could hide here until the storm ended, it'd be safe.
The storm had him on edge, naturally, so he was paying more attention than usual. He heard the sound coming from the basement and suspected he might have left a window open, so he headed down the stairs, figuring he could just bring up some kimchi to make it worthwhile in case he found nothing amiss.
However, he did notice that the window was indeed open. More noticeably, there was a child on the ground, curled up on the potatoes he stored here, drenched and shivering. Looked like a little puppy.
Yoongi looked around, his ears close to his head, but his senses were alert. Seemed as if the puppy was alone. Alone and clearly cold, probably scared, clearly not well-fed. Feral, if he had to guess.
So he spoke in a soft voice, looking at the boy. "Hello, there. Are you here for a visit?"
Kangwoo bared his teeth and snarled as best he could, wanting to look intimidating and failing. He was soaked, shivering and it was hard to be badass when he was this cold. Even so, his damp hair stood on end at the sight of the older hybrid and he slid off the potatoes, shaking violently to try and dislodge some of the water.
He didn't know how to best scare off the adult, especially when he was trapped in his basement and unsure how he'd reach the window.
"Go away and I'll bite." He hoped he could scare him off, it worked sometimes.
"...how are you going to bite when I go away?" Maybe he shouldn't tease the tiny boy. He was so small, he couldn't be much older than... Oh, he couldn't even guess. Adorable, though, that much was for sure. Yoongi stayed calm, crouching down a little to be closer to his level. "I have food upstairs and it's warmer there. I'm not dangerous."
Well. He could be dangerous. He also didn't usually welcome visitors. But most visitors were not nearly as adorable as this one. "I'm Min Yoongi. We could be friends."
Worth a try. Hard to convince a feral pup, he was sure, but he could try.
Food? He liked the idea of food. And warmer. He looked at Yoongi, suspicious and unsure, curling into himself a little because he didn't want the other to touch or get too close - especially not he was crouching down on his level. He reached to his shirt and pulled on it, it was all gross and felt uncomfortable, given how wet it was.
He frowned and wrung it a little in his hands. "Wet."
Could the hybrid fix that? He frowned and looked at the nice hyung, not sure but hopeful that the other knew how to solve his issue. He didn't like being soggy.
"I can give you something dry, sure." Well, he could find something that would somewhat fit him, he was sure. Yoongi smiled a little and then got up, heading up the stairs. When he reached the door, he held it open, looking back at Kangwoo to see whether he'd follow. "Come, I can help you dry off. Then you'll be warmer already."
The food smell was already obvious now, Yoongi had been simmering the soup for quite a while and he'd been in the process of preparing everything for potato pancakes to eat first. Rainy days always made him crave pancakes. "What's your name, puppy?"
Kangwoo came along, exclusively because the food smell enticed him. He didn't know if it was bad or not but he knew he was hungry so he went with his instinct. Sometimes people were nice. Some villagers would pet his head and call him a puppy sometimes so not everyone was terrible. It was just hard to predict. One person gave food, another gave a kick.
"Baek Kangwoo. I'm a wolf."
He wasn't, he was a dog at most but he liked to say wolf, it sounded way cooler. "I bite a lot." Like a scary, badass.
"Really, Kangwoo-ah? That's very scary. I hope you won't bite me." Yoongi led the boy into the bathroom, helping him sit down on the edge of the tub. Most things in his house were either wood or tiles, the bathroom was no exception. Personally, he felt as if it was his favourite room. "Do you want a hot bath? It would help you warm up."
Although he wasn't sure if the puppy trusted him enough yet. But here was hoping, because-- Well, he wasn't exactly clean. "Then I can give you fresh, dry clothes and you'll smell really nice."
Right now he really did not, not that he blamed him for that.
"No." Kangwoo wrinkled his nose at the white tub, not sure what it was but he wasn't really excited to find out. It was funny looking, all shiny and white, almost staring him down. His ears flattened to his head as he sniffed around, looking at the shampoo with suspicion. Why did they smell like that? He wasn't a big fan of this room.
"Towel, hyung." He tugged his shirt off and over his head, dropping it to the floor with a wet slap. He was all bruised and scratched up, likely from sleeping outside and living in the forest - and the dirt was pretty thick on him too.
Damn, he was so dirty. Maybe he could make a deal with him? Yoongi thought about it and reached for the honey bath cream he had, holding it out to Kangwoo and not actually handing it over. "Smell, you could be all nice like this. Not for eating though." Maybe that could be part two of his bribe. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a clementine he had kept in there.
"If you take a bath, hyung will feed you the yummy fruit right now."
The yummy fruit was tempting. Kangwoo sniffed the shampoo three times before finally, he hmmed a little and nodded his head, wary but hungry. He slid off his seat and kicked off his pants, standing there naked, hungry and bouncing a little. "Gimme first!"
He knew he had agreed to a bath and then fruit but he wanted the fruit. He loved those, they grew on a tree nearby but they were so hard to reach. He wanted all of them!
Yoongi started running the bath, but he nodded and also began peeling the fruit, until he could separate one piece and feed it to Kangwoo. He gave him another and pointed at the tub. "Now you have to get in." He put his hand in, just to make sure it wasn't too hot. "No more fruit until you are a bit cleaner."
And smelled a bit nicer, he was especially looking forward to that. He imagined the puppy would feel better than too, even if he wasn't actively aware of that. No one with a sensitive nose enjoyed smelling this strongly.
Reluctantly, Kangwoo got in, looking down at his warm feet curiously and kicking his feet a little. He slid into the bath and splashed his fingers, lightly at first as he watched his new hyung before slamming his hands down, just to test. As expected, the water went everywhere, splashing Yoongi up his side and hitting Kangwoo in his face. He scrunched up his nose, pouted and stopped doing it.
Instead, he looked at hyung, eyes wide. "More fruit."
Yoongi laughed, too amused to be annoyed by this. He was so cute, honestly, a real puppy. Not old enough to be by himself, that much was for sure. He gently wiped his face with a washcloth, then he did feed him another piece, sensing that he could use the vitamins as well as the sugar. "Do you have an appa or an eomma, Kangwoo?"
He was afraid he already knew the answer. "Or a hyung or noona? Or are you all alone?" Poor puppy. Yoongi looked him over, worried now that he might be injured.
"I'm alone usually. Sometimes others are there but I don't like when they're there."
Kangwoo liked to be alone, he trusted himself and he felt comfortable alone. Other people? They were just scary. Last time he trusted people, he got lost and hurt so never, ever again. "People are bad." Kangwoo nodded to himself, splashing his hands lightly in the water before taking another orange slice and eating it eagerly. "I don't like them."
"I don't like people either," Yoongi admitted, although he did feel it was a different statement coming from him than from this tiny puppy. Someone like that needed to be protected, he clearly didn't get enough food. He could count his ribs! Damn. One thing after the other. "Kang-ah, can you tell hyung if you are hurting anywhere? If you are, i can take care of it. make the pain go away."
Kangwoo frowned and cocked his head to the side, not sure what he was asking. Hurting? Pain? He frowned and tried to see if he could feel any pain or on himself but no, nothing. He wriggled his toes and his fingers, touched his face and his chest before shaking his head. "All okay." He was scratched up and a little bashed too but he didn't really consider that pain.
Pain was stepping on thorns or falling really far! This was nothing.
"I hurted myself ages ago in a tree." Kangwoo informed the adult as he kept on splashing. "I didn't cry." He did. He cried a lot. Non-stop.
"Aw, you are a brave pup, aren't you?" Yoongi continued cleaning him with the washcloth, even using it to clean his hair as well, since he seemed to be all right with that happening as long as he had orange slices to much on. He did look like he wasn't too badly hurt, at least, so there was that. Didn't ease his worries entirely, but at least they were less immediate. "Hyung is going to make potato pancakes and knife noodle soup. Do you think that will be nice?"
He felt it would be, very much so, especially with how he could still hear the rain coming down outside.
"Yeah but I don't have the shiny." He didn't know what it was called but the shiny thing all adults had and swapped around. He didn't get nice stuff without having the shiny so he wasn't sure what to do. It was sad. He would have liked a shiny. He frowned to himself a little and then looked at his hyung, not sure what he had to do to get pancakes but he was so hungry, he was willing to let Yoongi make him all wet.
"I was good." He didn't bite or not take a bath so he felt he should earn knife noodles. "Please, hyung? I want noodles."
"You are my dongsaeng, Kang-ah. You don't need the shiny to get taken care of by me." As if to show he meant that, Yoongi moved to wrap Kangwoo into a big and fluffy towel as he helped him out of the bath, rubbing him dry. "Are you warm now? See, hyung takes care."
He smiled as he knelt next to him, gently ruffling his hair, also drying it a little in the process. "Let's get you something to wear and then you can watch me make food and eat until you are full."
Something that he had a feeling Kangwoo hadn't done much.
"Dongsae--ng?" Okay. He was a tiny one who got love, like all the precious children who didn't have ears and didn't live in the woods. He didn't think he could be like that. He whined a little to himself, feeling a bit overwhelmed by it all as he held the towel around himself and tentatively followed Yoongi, his heart racing in his chest. This was so odd, he didn't know what he felt.
Walking into the other room, Kangwoo looked around the cosy little house and took it all in: four walls, warm inside, night lights and no rain. It was perfect. Like a fairy tale home.
"Do you like it? Hyung built the home." It was mostly made of wood and he had made several improvements over the years, but it was still cosy above all and - right now - simply much better than even a second outside, with the way the rain was coming down. Yoongi looked for a nice shirt for Kangwoo and then held it out to him, aware that it would look more like a dress. Whatever, at least it would be dry and warm and it did have a cute fox on the front, so there was that. "I can try and sew you some clothes that fit you tonight."
He probably should, the clothes he had worn before were hardly fitting either. He gestured at the front of the shirt and smiled. "Cute fox, yes?"
"What's a fox?" Kangwoo didn't know the names of the animals super well, he knew his own kind and he knew birds and some smaller animals but all the scary animals that could hurt him fell into the same name for the most part - the 'no' category. Animals that were no and he didn't want to know about.
"Your ears are like this." Kangwoo stroked the fox on the shirt and then held his hand up, wanting to stroke Yoongi's ears curiously. Was the fur gonna be soft or not?
Yoongi's ears flicked involuntarily, but then he tried to hold them still so that Kangwoo could stroke them, smiling a little. it had been a while since he'd been touched like that. "I'm a fox. We are a bit similar, yeah?" Although this was clearly a puppy. And an adorable one at that. Also a very hungry one, if that growling of his stomach was anything to go by.
So he picked Kangwoo up - he was so light, no wonder, thin little boy - and carried him along to the kitchen, where the broth was still bubbling away on the stove and his potato batter should have rested enough by now. "Do you want food? I'll make it. You can watch, if you want."
"I'll watch." Kangwoo watched the soup bubble with fascination, he'd never cooked food before or seem it cooking before. It was so cool. He wanted to touch it but his hand couldn't reach so he lost interest and looked over Yoongi's shoulder instead, his eye spying a little bowl with more clementine in it. Good, that meant he could have more later.
Looking back at his hyung, he reached for his ears again and giggled at how they twitched and flicked, petting them as lightly as he could. "You're funny, hyung!"
"Am I? Hm. Usually they just tell me I'm grumpy and no fun." Not that he was complaining. He didn't care for company. But he supposed the tiny puppy might prove to be an exception, at least for the moment. He waited for the pan to be hot enough, than put the first few scoops of batter in, so he could make three pancakes at once. The faster he could get some food into Kangwoo, the better. He balanced the boy on his hip as he got the water for the noodles started. "You can sleep in hyung's bed tonight, yeah? All warm and safe."
"Bed?" He knew those, they were so fancy. His tail, which had been mostly held down by wet and clothing at this point was now starting to get more freedom and wagged wildly within his cosy new shirt as he considered sleeping in a bed. What a lucky puppy he was! He made an excited little whine and squirmed, watching good become pancakes somehow. "Are you magic?"
How did hyung make nothing into something. Like noodles and pancakes. He didn't understand.
"It doesn't need magic to make this happen. It's just cooking. Hyung can teach you some time." One thing after the other. For now he flipped the pancakes and then quickly moved around to get the noodles he had cut before into the boiling water. "Do you like noodles? You've had them before, right?"
What had this tiny boy even eaten so far in life? He was honestly not sure what to think, he might not have gotten much good food along the way, that wouldn't surprise him in the least. "After food, we can play a little. Do you like to play?" This puppy needed love, that much was obvious.
"Noona fed me noodles." She was nice and gave him a big mouthful of noodles one day when he was in the town. She was nice and he remembered liking them a lot. "She was pretty." Yoongi was pretty too but not in the same way - he wasn't sure of how much he wanted to marry Yoongi but he definitely wanted to marry that noona one day. When he was bigger, stronger and had the shiny.
"What's a play, hyung? Is it like a bath?" He wasn't sure if he wanted another bath. He liked the hotness but the water in his face and hair was blah and not fun. He didn't like getting that sweat either.
"Playing is fun. It's... you'll see. It's not like a bath. Although you can play in the bath." That poor, deprived boy. Yoongi sighed as he gently set him down on the bench, so he had both hands free to finish up food. Only a minute later, Kangwoo had a steaming bowl of noodle soup in front of him, as well as a plate with three small pancakes on it. Yoongi joined him, his own bowl and plate in front of him, and he fed Kangwoo his first few bites, mostly because he wasn't sure how good he'd be at using chopsticks.
